200 REDUNDANT AT MEDICAL PLANT.

Byline: By MICHELLE MICHELLE Mid-Infrared Echelle Spectrograph  O'KEEFFE

THE first 200 axed workers at Abotts left the company for the last time yesterday.

Staff at the Galway plant in Mervue IDA park were told three weeks before Christmas the company will close by September with the loss of all 500 jobs. The next phase of the layoffs will take place in April with the final phase in September.

Abbott said it has to cut excess manufacturing capacity as its operations have to become more efficient.

Changes in medical practices have seen demand for its products fall significantly, particularly in the US.
