Andy Schwich, Los Angeles regional manager for the Southern California Special Olympics, said Santa Clarita and its athletes, the Sharks, have become a model for area programs.

``It's such a good example of community support,'' he said. ``It's a very strong program here. And this is a strong inaugural bowling tournament. I wanted to make sure we got all the areas in the region here.''

Jackie Hartmann, bowling coach to about 60 local Special Olympians and mother of an athlete, said many of her team members take bowling very seriously.

``Some of these guys here, they're really good. We've got some who average about 30 (a game), but there are others who average about 180. This is serious stuff for them.''
