20 YEARS AGO.Self-Snuffing Cigarettes?THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES subcomittee on Consumer Protection and Finance is considering a bill requiring cigarettes to stop burning within a period of 5 minutes if they are not smoked. Up to 80% of all furniture fires are caused by smoldering smol·der also smoul·der intr.v. smol·dered, smol·der·ing, smol·ders 1. To burn with little smoke and no flame. 2. cigarettes. The Upholstered Furniture Action Council, which supports the bill, says there are now 15 patents registered with self-extinguishing features. Passage of the bill is not expected to be either easy or rapid since the tobacco-producing states are well represented on the House subcommittee sub·com·mit·tee n.
