20,000 lawyers participate in Florida's legal aid programs.


Despite funding improvements from several sources, the sad reality is that only 20 percent of the legal needs of the poor are being met in Florida, according to according to

 Florida Bar The Florida Bar is the mandatory state bar association for the state of Florida. It is the third largest such bar association in the United States. Its duties include the regulation and discipline of attorneys.  Foundation President Bruce Blackwell.

"There is still not equal access to justice in Florida, but we continue to work to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Florida's poorest citizens," Blackwell said in giving the Foundation's annual report to the Bar Board of Governors in August.

The Foundation funds more than 30 legal aid agencies around the state, with approximately 350 attorneys who work for those agencies. Blackwell noted another 20,000 lawyers participate in legal aid programs, either by representing clients or contributing money.

 and Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp Jeffrey "Jeff" Kottkamp (born November 12, 1960) is an American politician from the State of Florida. Kottkamp, a Republican, served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2006. Kottkamp is currently Lieutenant Governor of Florida.  for their support of the $2.6 million for the Civil Legal Assistance Act, adding that Kottkamp's chief of staff, Larry Ringers, a former member of the Bar Board of Governors, has so far helped keep the money in the budget during a tight fiscal year.

Aside from legal aid work, the Foundation is involved in several other efforts.

Through administration of justice grants, the foundation is addressing the special problems of girls in the juvenile justice system and the difficulties of children who fall through the cracks of the dependency/delinquency system. The Foundation is also the principal funding source for the Florida Innocence Project

The Innocence Project refers to a number of non-profit legal clinics in the United States. The most well known is based at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University in New York City.

See memory allocation.  almost $2.5 million for "infrastructure" improvements for legal aid programs, he said. It is also funding a statewide case management system.

Around $250,000 has been allocated annually to help repay the law school loans for legal aid attorneys, and a similar amount to pay for summer fellowship/clerkships for law students at legal aid agencies.

Beyond that, Blackwell said the Foundation also provides grants to 10 of the state's 11 law schools for projects that help the poor.
