2-YEAR-OLD NEEDS CASH FOR HOSPITAL.

VALENCIA - There is nothing more tragic for Cris Embleton than knowing a tragically ill baby is out there and that Embleton's hands are tied - because of money.

Embleton, executive director of the local chapter of Healing the Children, all but conceded defeat this week, raising just $600 of the $15,000 needed to bring a dying infant from Mexico for lifesaving treatment.

``Can you imagine being a mom or dad and just because you're living in the wrong spot your child won't be saved. . . . Your child will suffer?'' Embleton said, a catch in her voice.

Two-month-old Maria has a rare form of eye cancer. She lost one eye shortly after birth. Without treatment, she will lose the other eye, and likely not make it to her first birthday.

The organization, which provides medical services to critically ill children across the world, has a top ocular oncologist on the case, eager to donate his services if funding is available for hospital and other medical costs.

Maria will come to the United States with her mother, anyway, for an evaluation - and a miracle.

``She's coming in just to see if she's still treatable,'' Embleton said.

``It's very rare that we personally come in touch with the kids we can't help. I really believe God brings these people to us.''

Healing the Children put out a special appeal last week in hopes of raising the money for Maria.

Based on reports about Maria's case, Dr. Linn Murphree believes he can save not only her life, but her vision. And while the organization typically finds doctors willing to donate their services, hospitals must be paid, Embleton said.

``It's a service they can render for us - it's a matter of giving us a bed and using equipment - they're always helpful,'' Embleton said. ``But when it starts costing them money, hospitals just can't do that. That's why we need money.''
