2-POINT DAGGER STRAIGHT TO HART WESTLAKE RALLIES IN LAST MINUTE TO WIN WESTLAKE 25, HART 24.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Westlake needed two to prove it is No. 1.

The Warriors scored with 41 seconds remaining on a touchdown pass from Rudy Carpenter to Michael Stuart Michael Stuart (born January 9, 1975 in New York City) is a salsa singer and actor of Puerto Rican descent. Early years

Instead of taking the tie, Westlake coach Jim Benkert put his offense back out to try for two points and the lead. Carpenter hit a stumbling stumbling

Westlake held off Hart's final effort and proved itself worthy of its No. 1 ranking Thursday, defeating preseason No. 1 Hart 25-24 in a nonleague game at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. ``A lot of people didn't believe in us even though we were ranked No. 1,'' Mowry said. ``I think they'll believe in us now.''

The loss drops Hart to 0-3 for the first time since 1985 and was the team's fourth defeat in a row dating back to last year's Southern Section Div. II championship game.

To establish itself as the true top team in the area, Westlake (3-0) needed to beat the team that has commanded the spot for much of the past decade.

The game was tied until Hart receiver Kevin Ciccone, who was held without a catch for most of the first half, caught a short slant pass from the Hart 1 and took it 99 yards for the longest passing play in Hart history with 4:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.

, overcoming a fourth-and-1 along the way. Carpenter completed a 17-yard pass to Stuart, followed by a 24-yard pass to tight end Jimmy Miller to put Westlake in position for the touchdown.

Westlake could have settled for the tie, but that wouldn't have been enough of a statement for the Warriors.

``We talked about it, and I told all the coaches that I'd rather lose the game than tie,'' Carpenter said.

The victory completed revenge week for the Warriors. Westlake beat the two teams that handed it regular-season defeats last season, starting with Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. For most of the team, it was sweet redemption. For Carpenter, who transferred to Westlake from Newbury Park this year and wasn't around for last season, it was his chance to show how he could play in big games.

``I never really played teams like these before,'' Carpenter said. ``This is what I was looking forward to when I transferred.''

Carpenter struggled early, failing to take advantage of good field position off Hart turnovers and throwing two interceptions.

But trailing 17-10 late in the third quarter and with Hart controlling every facet of the game, he led an 80-yard drive and found Stuart in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown to tie the game. Stuart caught 11 passes for 168 yards.
