2 migrants die trying to reach Spain

A Spanish Red Cross spokesman says two migrants died trying to reach Spain from northwest Africa in a wooden boat that was carrying 58 people in all.

The spokesman says the boat arrived at Los Cristianos port on the Canary Island of Tenerife around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. He says the migrants are believed to be from sub-Saharan countries.

The aid worker says all the boat's occupants are male. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of local Red Cross regulations. Spanish National Radio says port workers alerted authorities to the boat's arrival.

Thousands of Africans try to reach Europe each year by sailing in small fishing boats from Africa to Spain's Canary Islands, a dangerous journey that can take weeks.
