2 men charged in Fla. homeless slayingsPolice arrested two young men in connection with the deaths of two homeless men found shot in alleys, officials said. The suspects told detectives that robbery was the motive, police spokesman Bill Proffitt said. He said the two victims were "easy targets" and drugs may have played a role in the shootings. Both victims were drug users. Cordaro Antwan Hardin, 18, and Dorion Deshawn Dillard, 20, were arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder, police spokesman George Kajtsa said. It was not clear Wednesday if the men had lawyers to speak for them. The victims were 43-year-old Jeffery Shultz and David Heath, 53. Heath had an alcohol problem and spent time recently in a detoxification facility. His ex-wife, Lynn-Marie Carty, said he had three children. Shultz suffered a serious brain injury years ago and has been in and out of drug rehabilitation, relatives said. He had just returned to the city after visiting his family in Fort Myers for Christmas. The Jan. 17 shootings intensified a clash between the city and its homeless residents. Homeless people protested by gathering in tent encampments in defiance of city codes. City officials are now allowing two tent cities.
