NORTHBRIDGE - Though the lazy, hazy days of summer are here, the School Committee will be at work this week.

The School Committee plans to interview two candidates for interim superintendent at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Northbridge High School media center: Henry J. O'Donnell of Salem, former superintendent of Northbridge Public Schools, who retired in 2005, and Kenneth J. Grew of Grafton.

Superintendent Paul K. Soojian has accepted a position in Leicester.

"I think it's a rare opportunity (to have a chance to hire Mr. O'Donnell as interim)," said School Committee member Michael S. McGrath at the June 24 meeting when the committee first discussed hiring an interim superintendent. School Committee member Michael LeBrasseur agreed with Mr. McGrath, "I think we should definitely interview him."

The School Committee already scheduled an executive session to discuss matters pertaining per·tain

to possible contract negotiations after the interviews; however, the committee is posted to meet at 7 p.m. July 9 in the Northbridge High School media center to discuss the interim process.

At their June 24 meeting, School Committee members said they received and reviewed nine resumes. They came up with four names to interview, but the other two candidates decided not to continue the process when they learned the job could last

up to a year.

The goal of the School Committee is to hire an interim superintendent by the end of the month, with a start date of Aug. 1.

Mr. O'Donnell, 68, served as superintendent of the Northbridge public schools from March 1994 until June 30, 2005, when he retired. In addition to working in a number of other positions, Mr. O'Donnell served as superintendent from 1979 to 1988 in Salem. "I can guarantee you: A Smooth transition, a smooth opening to the school year, a positive impact on teachers' and employees' morale, a positive and open dialogue with parents, community groups and town officials...," wrote Mr. O'Donnell in a June 19 letter to the School Committee. "I submit my resume to fill the interim superintendent position not based on the need for a job, but rather on a need and sincere desire to make a final contribution to a community and school system where I spent one-third of my professional life as an educator, and a community and school system that I still care enough about to help while they proceed in the selection of their next educational leader."

There was a dispute over approximately $9,000 worth of office furniture used by Mr. O'Donnell when he retired.

Officials did not know the whereabouts - or ownership rights - of the furniture used by Mr. O'Donnell when he vacated his office in the administration building on Linwood Avenue. Town officials subsequently determined after several weeks in 2005 that the town owns the furniture, and the School Department took possession of it.
