2 STEPS FORWARD, 1 BACK : PITCHER MOORE WORKS ON FORM IN CLASS A.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

It's never easy to be demoted, as Lancaster pitcher Trey Moore recently found out.

After being Seattle's second-round pick from Texas A&M in 1994, then having successful stints at rookie-level Bellingham in 1994 and last year at Class A Riverside, Moore was promoted to Class AA Port City, N.C.

But he ran into trouble this season, and on June 5, after compiling com·pile

2. To put together or compose from materials gathered from several sources:
a 7.71 ERA, he was sent back to the Class A club, now located in Lancaster.

``He's been humbled,'' Lancaster manager Dave Brundage said.

Moore said he was told the organization wants him to ``work on things.''

Specifically, Moore is being asked to cut down on his stride during his pitching delivery.

``If you get too far, you don't get your arm a chance to catch up,'' Brundage said.

Every time Moore goes to the mound mound, prehistoric earthwork erected over a burial place as a memorial or landmark, a defensive embankment, or a site for ceremonial or religious rites. Such structures are found in many parts of the world, but the name is applied in particular to those of North , cutting down his stride is in the back of his mind, he said.

``But there's a batter up there, and your main focus is to try and get him,'' he said.

For Moore, the return trip was a chance to work with pitching coach Juan Eichelberger Juan Tyrone Eichelberger (born October 21, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri) was a pitcher for the San Diego Padres (1978–82), Cleveland Indians (1983) and Atlanta Braves (1988). He graduated from Balboa High School of San Francisco, California in 1971. , whom he worked well with last year.

``I know I'm here to work on some things and try to get better,'' Moore said with a tone of humility Humility

Thursday was his second start since coming to Lancaster. By all accounts, he pitched well, striking out a season-high eight with two walks in seven innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31. .

Yet he gave up 10 hits, though only two balls were hit hard. He surrendered a double to Ben Davis Ben Davis may refer to:

, and Keith Eaddy hit a fly ball that center fielder Marcus Sturdivant ran down at the wall, about 410 feet away.

Moore, however, was the losing pitcher, which did not concern the coaching staff.

``He did all right,'' Eichelberger said. ``He threw the ball decent.''

``It's not for lack of talent that he's here,'' Brundage said. ``It's to get him straight, get him some confidence and get him back to double-A.''

There's no time limit for Moore to make his return to Port City. But Brundage guaranteed ``the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. In eight innings, Van De Weg struck out eight, gave up five hits and no runs.

Asked about Van De Weg's performance, Moore equated him with a turn-of-the-century pitcher who has an award named after him.

``You mean Cy Young?'' Moore asked.
