Superior Court Judge James Albracht sentenced Jae-Whoa Chung, 50, to two years in prison but gave the exorcist, Sung Soo Choi, 47, the maximum of four years in prison.

He rejected a defense plea to grant both men probation.

``I'm struck by the tragedy to all people whose lives were touched by this case, but I can't escape that a good, honest woman and mother of two children . . . is dead,'' Albracht said.

Kyung Jae Chung, 53, died July 4 after consenting to an exorcism exorcism (ĕk`sôrsĭz'əm), ritual act of driving out evil demons or spirits from places, persons, or things in which they are thought to dwell. It occurs both in primitive societies and in the religions of sophisticated cultures.  in which she was struck and several men stood on her chest. She also was stomped in the hours-long ritual held in Koreatown and at a Century City condominium.

Sixteen of Chung's ribs were broken. The muscles in her thighs were so damaged that tissue had died. Her internal organs were displaced and crushed, and a vein leading to her heart was torn.

Her husband testified that he finally stopped the exorcism when he noticed that his wife was not breathing.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Hank Goldberg asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence for both men.

``They had five hours to see what they were doing or stop what they were doing,'' he said.

Defense lawyers insisted the woman who died, as well as their clients, fervently believed they were waging a battle with a powerful demon named Legion.

The prosecution's chief witness was Glendale Calvary Presbyterian Church Calvary Presbyterian Church (Calvary Church) is located in the Marquette University district of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Chungs ran a school in Bangladesh and had come to California to attend church meetings.
