Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

A local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter, marshaling proceeds from summer fund-raisers, pledged $1,000 this week to Mitchell and Mint Canyon elementary schools.

, principal of Mint Canyon Elementary, said school and PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  officials haven't decided how to spend the donations. ``We're still not sure what we'll use it for. Probably (it will be) something to do with reading,'' he said.

Mint Canyon has 385 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

In the wake of Proposition 227, which mandated English immersion classes instead of the state's longstanding bilingual education practice, the school has a need for reading materials. ``We used to have a bilingual program, but now we have all English,'' Levy said.

``If we do use the veterans' money for that, it would be for purchasing materials for the students who don't have English as a primary language - to make switching to English-only more easy,'' the principal added.

Another possibility would be for the school to purchase a conflict-resolution program for the school, Levy added. ``It entails teaching lessons relative to how to handle different conflicts you might have with other students, and how to resolve that. And along with that goes character building and self-esteem building.''

Domke, an Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. , said the VFW tries to regularly support local charities. ``Throughout the year, we put on various fund-raisers,'' he said.

One of their most popular events at the hall is a barbecue. ``We (cook) about 300 pounds of tri-tip at a time. We sell the food and have raffles,'' Domke added.

``We like to donate to (causes) that have very low overhead. We try to help out. We figure this is what we're here for,'' he said.

It was merely coincidental that donations came the same week as Veterans Day. ``I'm glad it worked out that way. Although (the nation) recognizes veterans, maybe the veterans can also help some people, too.''
