Prosecutors allege Taylor was aiming for a rival gang member when he fired into a group of 40 students waiting at a bus stop at Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. Another passenger in the vehicle, Jeffrey Trinnell Young of Panorama City, was arrested but was later released without charges being filed.

Taylor's defense attorney, Bob Rentzer, said he believes Young was the actual shooter and his client is innocent. Rentzer has filed a motion requesting a suspect lineup be performed in front of witnesses that includes Young and Taylor.
