Byline: Don Holland Daily News Staff Writer

Two men suspected in the slaying of a Moorpark man in what police said was an unprovoked ``stabbing frenzy'' pleaded not guilty Friday.

Both face one charge of murder in the July 21 killing of Robert Bankson, 24, of Moorpark. Imes is also charged with use of a deadly weapon deadly weapon n. any weapon which can kill. Although the defense may seek separate trials, Fox said the presumption is for a consolidated trial.

According to Morgan's testimony in front of the grand jury, Morgan and Bankson started talking with Imes in Midtown Ventura following a concert. After the three decided to walk to the beach, Morgan, 22, of Oxnard, offered a hallucinogenic hal·lu·ci·no·gen

Imes, Morgan said, got a strange look in his eye and without provocation or saying a word, punched Bankson in the face. Morgan pinned Imes to the ground and was trying to calm him when Gatica knocked Morgan off. Imes then allegedly pulled a knife and went on what police termed a ``stabbing frenzy,'' wounding Morgan, Bankson, Gatica and himself.

Morgan escaped to get help. When he looked back at the scene, he saw his friend, Bankson, being attacked.

Bankson died of multiple stab wounds in his chest. One wound to the eye penetrated his brain.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Imes and Gatica could be sentenced to 25 years to life. A second-degree murder conviction is punishable by a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
