Two reputed white supremacists pleaded no contest Monday in an attack on an African-American Wal-Mart employee in Lancaster after the man talked to their female companion in the store parking lot.

Shaun Lee Broderick, 20, and Christopher Crawford, 26, pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon Assault with a Deadly Weapon is the term used to describe the act of threatening to harm one or more people by using a weapon (usually a firearm). A third suspect, Dennis Butt, who was connected to the meth lab but not the Wal-Mart attack, pleaded guilty Aug. 11 to manufacturing methamphetamine and was sentenced to five years of probation and 210 days in county jail.

Investigators said Broderick and Crawford attacked Nathaniel Harris on March 23 as he stopped to talk to their female friend while collecting shopping carts in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Harris, who suffered minor injuries, said he struck up a conversation with the woman believing that she attended the same high school he did. Harris was struck in the upper body with a claw hammer by one man and punched by the other. A security guard pulled the two men off Harris.

After the attack, the assailants got into a car and attempted to hit Harris before driving away.

They were stopped and arrested by sheriff's deputies about a half an hour later at a motel room where Broderick had been staying.
