2 OUT OF 3 BANDS AGREEABLE.

Byline: Michelle J. Mills Staff Writer

THE MOST UNUSUAL sight during Saturday's loud-as-it-wants-to-be Pop Disaster Tour The Pop Disaster Tour was a two-month 2002 concert tour that was co-headlined pop-punk bands blink-182 and Green Day.

The opener up through May 19 was Jimmy Eat World with Saves the Day finishing the tour. Kut U Up was also seen in these parts, albeit on a secondary stage.
(featuring Green Day, Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World) wasn't the moshing of the crowd or the on-stage pyrotechnics pyrotechnics (pī'rōtĕk`nĭks, pī'rə–), technology of making and using fireworks. Gunpowder was used in fireworks by the Chinese as early as the 9th cent.  at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine.

of families in the audience. Mixing with the usual assortment of concertgoers - young girls in hip-hugging jeans and tiny T-shirts, a couple of men in sport coats and even a few hippies - there were moms, dads and kids, looking like they were on an outing to Disneyland.

Jimmy Eat World opened the show (which makes its final Southland stop at the Forum tonight) with its catchy hit ``Bleed American'' and smoothly slid into its alternative standard groove, ``Lucky Denver Mint.'' The scrim scrim

behind the band harked to its members' Mesa, Ariz., home, depicting a desert scene that turned from afternoon browns to sunset oranges and deep blue night, in perfect time with the real setting sun.

The group's harmonies and musicianship show why Jimmy Eat World garnered two major-label releases before its members turned 21 years old.

The audience was receptive but low-key until hearing the splashy splash·y

Encores left wanting, the Jimmy Eat World desert scene was replaced by the ``Pop Disaster Tour'' logo, a comic-book-style skull and crossbones skull and crossbones

With a flourish of pyrotechnics, Green Day blasted the crowd with ``Maria,'' but their excitement wasn't enough for vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled. . He stopped the band and demanded that the crowd form a mosh pit at the front of the stage. Only then did they launch into their high-energy set, peppered with the hits ``Welcome to Paradise,'' ``When I Come Around,'' ``Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)'' and a spirited cover of ``Shout.''

The highlight of the evening was when Green Day called up volunteers from the audience to take over guitar, bass and drums "Guitar, Bass and Drums" is the three EP campaign from British rock singer, Toby Jepson.  for a number. The three ecstatic fans did a fair job and the crowd cheered on their efforts.

Simple red curtains set the tone for Blink-182, which should have come with its own parental advisory warning. Those smiles of the previously charmed families quickly turned to looks of shock as the band spat a steady outpouring of expletives and X-rated references that ranged from drugs and prostitution Drugs and prostitution are related in that some drug addicts, most commonly heroin or crack cocaine users, obtain their drugs primarily through prostitution. To be fair, bands often use some coarseness in their acts, but Blink went over the top. Before the fourth song in the set, the audience had dwindled to slightly more than half.

Despite the promising selection of music, cool lighting and an even cooler drum solo by Travis Barker (who wound up suspended over the crowd), much of Blink's music sounded pretty much the same from song to song with unintelligible UNINTELLIGIBLE. That which cannot be understood.
