The second victim's name was being withheld until relatives were notified, according to wire service reports.

The license plate of the van was linked to a hiker whose son had reported him missing earlier Wednesday, officials said.

The crash was originally reported by a state highway worker who saw the marks and roadside debris, Garcia said.

California Highway Patrol officers at the scene said the minivan may have been going too fast, or the driver may have fallen asleep.

The winding mountain highway is bordered by concrete berms. The van apparently was southbound on the highway when it went out of control, banking off the right side and then skidding until it launched from the left side of the road, said CHP CHP Chapter
