High school officials say they might not renew the charter for the Henry Hearns Charter School of Academic Excellence because of financial problems and low enrollment.

The board at Wednesday's meeting held a public hearing to determine the level of support for renewing the school's charter.

One former student told the board he wouldn't be able to speak to trustees if it hadn't been for the charter school, trustee Al Beattie said.

The board is expected to make a decision on whether or not to renew the charter at its May 18 meeting.

``They were asking for an extension of the charter. Recognizing that they have had problems, they have in place strong people for various aspects of finance and curriculum,'' Beattie said. ``It was not a two-way conversation. It was their opportunity to make their presentation.''

The Henry Hearns Charter School of Academic Excellence owes the state $134,000 because it lacks documentation for the attendance it reported. Enrollment has dropped by 50 percent from last year to fewer than 40 students.

To cut spending, the school has eliminated bus service, which may further adversely affect the enrollment, and school Principal Gloria Swift, who is also one of the teachers, has submitted her resignation effective at the end of the school year, the report said.

Charter school officials said they have plans to increase enrollment and repay the state.

The charter school held a fundraiser in February and raised about $55,000. Another event scheduled for June is expected to bring in between $70,000 and $75,000, school officials said.
