2 LOCALS WIN ROTC SCHOLARSHIPS.


Two Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:
  • Valencia High School (Placentia, California), a public high school in Placentia, California.
  • Valencia High School (Santa Clarita, California), a public high school in Santa Clarita, California.
 students, Kareem Omar and Melissa Colley, will receive Air Force ROTC scholarships. The winners, among 215 picked from a pool of 609 candidates nationwide, were chosen by a Junior ROTC selection board convened in Alabama.

Omar was nominated for his superior academic and leadership skills. He has been a cadet with the CA-782 JROTC JROTC Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps  for three years and currently serves as the deputy group commander, with the rank of cadet lieutenant colonel The grade of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel (abbreviated C/Lt Col) is a Phase IV Cadet Officer grade that a cadet of the Civil Air Patrol may attain. It also is the fourth milestone of five in the cadet program. The grade is synonymous with the General Ira C. Eaker Award. .

Colley was honored for an excellent academic record and military leadership. She started her Junior ROTC career in Kaiserslautern, Germany. She continued her affiliation with the Valencia High School program, has earned the rank of cadet colonel The grade of Cadet Colonel (abbreviated C/Col) is the highest grade, and final milestone that a cadet of the Civil Air Patrol may attain. The grade is synonymous with the General Carl A. Spaatz Award.  and is a past group commander.

The selection board considered many factors in its decisions. Grades, class standing, standardized test A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1]  scores and teacher recommendations were considered.

Upon graduation from college, both will be commissioned as Air Force officers.
