2 KILLED IN SEPARATE COLLISIONS 15-YEAR-OLD THROWN FROM TRUCK; PEDESTRIAN HIT WHILE CROSSING STREET.

Byline: KAREN MAESHIRO Staff Writer

LANCASTER -- Two people died in traffic collisions over the weekend, one a 15-year-old girl who was thrown from a truck after it was hit by a drunk driving suspect and the second a pedestrian hit by a car as he was crossing a street.

Shampagne Pittman of Lake Point was killed early Monday when the 2001 Ford F-250 pickup truck she was riding in collided with a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup that ran a stop sign on Avenue H at 90th Street East, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the Ford F-250, which was heading north on 90th Street East, was unable to stop and crashed into the right rear side of the Ranger truck about 3:15 a.m., the CHP said.

The driver of the Ranger, Julio Reyes, 27, of Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. He suffered major injuries and was taken to Lancaster Community Hospital.

The driver of the Ford F-250 and four other passengers were hospitalized with less serious injuries.

They are driver Alva Jeffries, 54; Jack Jeffries, 66, and Jasmine Santos, 14, all of Glendale, Ariz.; and Xavier Pittman, 9, and Sharlene Pittman, 13, both of Lakeport, Calif.

Shampagne Pittman, Sharlene Pittman and Santos were not wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.

Joshua Arron Cambell, 25, of Lancaster was killed when he was hit by a car in the 2800 block of East Avenue I about 11:40 p.m. Sunday.

Cambell was walking north across Avenue I when he was hit by a 1991 Lincoln driven by Martin Rodriguez-Perez, 34, of Lancaster, sheriff's deputies said.

Cambell was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Rodriguez-Perez was not injured.

Excessive speed did not appear to have played a role in the collision. Witnesses reported that Cambell might have been drinking shortly before the collision, deputies said.
