Los Angeles fire Capt. Randy Beaty of Fire Station No. 60 posed Thursday for the 2006 Milk & Cookies Calendar, besting a hundred firehouse bakers with his Chocolate Malted Oatmeal Cookies. County fire Capt. Lynn A. Mohr also earned a calendar page for his Lemon Surf Squares.

But when it comes to culinary plaudits, the firefighters deferred to their wives.

``I cook once in awhile,'' said Beaty, 47, of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , preparing for a photo shoot at his North Hollywood station. ``(But) let me be honest with you: My wife gave me lots of help on this.''

The Milk & Cookies Calendar, created by the California Milk Advisory Board and the California Fire Foundation, features a dozen winning bakers from throughout the state.

Launched in 2002, it has raised more than $20,000 a year for the California Firefighters Memorial and families of fallen firefighters.

The calendar features tough-looking firefighters holding a glass of milk and such blue-ribbon cookies as Dalmatians.

Beaty, a 6-foot-3-inch firefighter with GQ good looks, flashed a milk- white smile for the debonair deb·o·nair also deb·o·naire

Though Mohr can also whip up some mean firehouse food, he said the credit for his Lemon Surf Squares goes to a family recipe of his wife, Anne.

``They're delicious,'' Mohr, 54, of Moorpark, said of the bars named for surfers a block from Station 88 in Malibu. ``The taste ... They're made of good ingredients - fresh lemon, grated zest, powdered sugar on top.

``And lots of love from my beautiful wife.''
