2 Italian tourists killed, 8 people injured in car crash in Siberia

Two Italian tourists were killed and several others injured Saturday when their bus overturned on an island on Siberia's Lake Baikal, a medical official said.

Eight Italians, a translator and a driver were in the bus traveling on Olkhon Island when the incident happened, said Dr. Yevgeny Netyaev, a surgeon with the Irkutsk region emergency medicine department.

One of the injured was hospitalized with critical injuries, and all the other occupants of the bus suffered serious or slight injuries, he said in televised comments.

The two women killed were elderly, the Interfax news agency reported.

Lake Baikal _ the world's largest freshwater lake by volume _ is a popular summer destination for European and Russian tourists.
