 drivers for the mayhem that started at 5:15 a.m. when five vehicles tangled as traffic slowed unexpectedly.

That tied up the southbound freeway for five miles, and the ensuing backup resulted in collisions involving eight more vehicles. It was more than 90 minutes before traffic flowed smoothly.

``He began to slow down for the traffic ahead of him,'' Sweeney said. ``He slowed down - everybody else did not.''

Trinidad was hit from behind by Mark Meyer, 46, of Agua Dulce, who was driving a 1999 Dodge pickup. Meyer was rear-ended by Louis Capasso, 47 of Lancaster, driving a Saturn. Two more motorists from Palmdale completed the chain reaction.

Capasso suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

About 20 minutes after the lanes had reopened and speeds began to pick up, three more crashes occurred in the same area, officials said.

One driver, Marie Rodriguez, 52, of Lancaster, was transported to Newhall Memorial with possible internal injuries.
