2 HELD AFTER CAR CRASHES INTO APARTMENT DRIVER AND PASSENGER PULL GUNS, FIRE SHOTS INTO ANGRY CROWD, DEPUTIES SAY.

QUARTZ HILL - A driver police believe was drunk and his passenger were arrested Christmas night on suspicion of shooting at people who surrounded the men's car after it crashed into an apartment building.

Charles William Moore Jr. (born June 21, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama), is a former professional baseball player who played in the Major Leagues primarily as a catcher and outfielder from 1973-1987.

 the report, about two dozen people ran out of the apartment and started kicking the car and trying to beat up the driver,'' said Lancaster sheriff's station spokesman Micah Currado.

The crash occurred about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4800 block of West Avenue L-14, officials said.

Deputies say they believe Moore was dropping Joseph off at the apartment building, where he lives. But Moore lost control of the car and it crashed into a corner apartment, deputies said.

 officers said the crash caused no major damage, but people who came out of the apartment building got in an altercation with the driver, deputies said.

The driver and his companion both pulled guns out of the car and turned to flee, but fired several shots at the crowd, deputies were told. Nobody was hit.

Deputies and CHP officers surrounded the area and searched for the driver and his passenger with help from a police dog and a helicopter.

The two men were located soon after and taken into custody.

Deputies arrested the two men and took them to the Lancaster sheriff's station jail, where they were being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Assault with a Deadly Weapon is the term used to describe the act of threatening to harm one or more people by using a weapon (usually a firearm). Here, assault must be differentiated from battery as they are often confused. Assault is threatening to use force.  without bail.

Moore was also being held on suspicion of violating probation stemming from a Nov. 1 conviction for possession of marijuana marijuana or marihuana, drug obtained from the flowering tops, stems, and leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa (see hemp) or C. indica; the latter species can withstand colder climates.  for sale.

Investigators are awaiting the results of blood tests before adding charges of driving under the influence of alcohol against Moore.

California Highway Patrol investigators say preliminary tests indicate Moore was under the influence at the time of his arrest.
