SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Because of their love for the environment and their efforts to protect it, Michelle Hoffman and Ray Lorme have been named the 2001 Green Tiger Award winners by the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Sierra Club Sierra Club, national organization in the United States dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the world's parks, wildlife, and wilderness areas. Founded (1892) in California by a group led by the Scottish-American conservationist John Muir, the Sierra Club .

Hoffman, who uses her bicycle as her primary form of transportation, was surprised and honored to receive the award. Her husband, Joe, immediately hung the certificate on their living-room wall.

``We have a very active group and I think everyone deserves an award,'' Michelle Hoffman said. ``They're all environmental Green Tigers, they just don't have certificates on their walls yet.''

The Board of Supervisors is the body governing counties in the U.S.
 meetings, takes part in protests for environmental causes, belongs to the Sierra Club bike committee and travels with her three grandchildren, always teaching them to protect the environment.

``All my grandchildren are little Green Tigers, too,'' Michelle Hoffman said.

Lorme, a father of three teens, keeps busy with soccer games and family activities in between hikes and committees he serves on for the Sierra Club. He has been an active member since 1980.

Lorme has served as an outings leader since 1982, and has been honored with the Angeles Chapter Outings Leader Award. He has led dozens of hikes into Elsmere Canyon and the Santa Clarita Woodlands, introducing members to the beauty of the area.
