2 FOUND ALIVE AFTER LANDING PILOT OF AIRCRAFT, TEACHER OK, COLD.

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - A student glider pilot and an instructor were found safe Sunday after spending a freezing night in the mountains as a result of making an emergency landing in a canyon.

``The people were unhurt and the plane was unhurt,'' said Dale Masters, an instructor at the school south of Pearblossom. ``It was a perfect case of what to do in a bad situation.''

Instructor Yvonne Robinson-Giguere, granddaughter of glider-school owner Fred Robinson, and student pilot Thomas Erickson, 45, of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  were spotted about 7:20 a.m. Sunday by people in a plane from the school, deputies said. A sheriff's helicopter that was also searching for the glider picked them up in the canyon south of the Mountain High ski area.

The pair didn't need hospitalization. The sheriff's helicopter flew the two to a mountain road where paramedics treated them for the effects of the cold, deputies said. Mountain temperatures fell into the low 20s overnight and winds were gusting over 20 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The sailplane had been reported missing after dark Saturday, deputies said.
