 Marshall, 43, was swimming with his wife Deborah when he was swept away on Saturday.

He was dragged ashore outside a safe swimming area with Australian friend Arthur Skellern, 33, but could not be saved.

Surfers managed to grab Deborah, 41, at Mermaid Beach near Brisbane, Australia. She was recovering in hospital last night.

A neighbour of Ray's in Strood, Kent, said: "We just can't believe it. He was such a lovely man."
