2 DEPUTIES CHARGED IN PRISONER ASSAULTS.

Two Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County sheriff's deputies have been indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  on federal charges of assaulting jail inmates and trying to cover up the acts, prosecutors said Thursday.

Deputy Abel Jimenez, 31, and Senior Deputy Phalance Burkhalter, 37, both of Los Angeles, were named in a seven-count indictment returned late Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles, said U.S. Attorney Debra W. Yang.

The indictment accuses Jimenez of two counts of deprivation of rights under color of law The appearance of a legal right.

The indictment alleges that Jimenez assaulted two prisoners on Nov. 28 and Dec. 31, 2001, in unrelated incidents Unrelated Incidents is a series of poems by Tom Leonard. One of the more well-known of this series is "The Six o'clock news" where the poem takes the form of a Glaswegian reading the news autocue like a BBC newsreader.  at the Inmate Reception Center.

Burkhalter allegedly attempted to persuade the inmates not to report the assaults and to lie about how their injuries occurred, the indictment said.

Both deputies will likely be arraigned next month in Los Angeles.

If they are convicted of all counts in the indictment, Jimenez faces a maximum possible sentence of 45 years in federal prison, and Burkhalter faces a maximum possible sentence of 25 years in federal prison.
