2 CANDIDATES, 2 APPROACHES; HOPEFULS FOR 7TH DISTRICT TELL OF VISION FOR CITY, VALLEY AND NEIGHBORHOODS.


THE candidates to succeed freshman state Sen. Richard Alarcon as the council member from the 7th District are as different in style, philosophy and life experience as their difference in age suggests.

Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  grew up in the district community of Pacoima, is 26 years old, a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business,  and has worked in in the district office of Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , D-Panorama City.

Padilla was the top vote-getter in the April primary, earning 48 percent of the vote in a six-candidate field. Corinne Sanchez, his opponent in Tuesday's runoff, placed second with 25 percent of the vote.

The runoff has been competitive, with both camps accusing the opposite side of using unfair tactics to gain an advantage. In one tiff, Padilla pointed out that Sanchez's campaign manager is a consultant for Pacific Pipeline Inc., which built a controversial oil line through the district over the objections of residents. The next day, Sanchez fired back, revealing Padilla had accepted campaign contributions from another Pacific Pipeline lobbyist.

Both candidates sat talked with the Daily News editorial board recently and each told the panel why they were the better person to represent the working-class, largely Latino district in City Hall. Their comments have been edited for clarity and length.
