2 BRUSH FIRES KEEP VENTURA COUNTY, OTHER CREWS BUSY.

Ventura County firefighters battled two brush fires north and south of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Thursday, including one in Black Canyon The Black Canyon may refer to
  • the Black Canyon of the Colorado, on the Colorado River
  • the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, on the Gunnison River
 where residents left their homes voluntarily to seek shelter, officials said.

The Black Canyon fire started about 2:33 p.m. and was first reported from the 1024 block of Black Canyon Road, Fire Department officials said.

It was put out about 3:37 p.m., with the assistance of firefighters from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city and county fire departments.

Although no homes were damaged, several residents chose to voluntarily leave their residences as a safety precaution, officials said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Another brush fire erupted about 1:07 p.m. at the base of Piru Canyon Diversion Dam A diversion dam is the term for a dam that diverts all or a portion of the flow of a river from its natural course. Diversion dams do not generally impound water in a reservoir. , officials said. Full containment was expected by dark Thursday.
