2 ARTISTS' WORKS TO BE SHOWN AT SIMI ARTS CENTER.

Photographs from a variety of historical viewpoints will be exhibited beginning this evening at the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Cultural Arts Center.

"A Horace Bristol Horace Bristol (November 16, 1908-1997) was a twentieth century American photographer, best known for his work in Life magazine. His photos appeared in Time, Fortune, Sunset, and National Geographic magazines.  Collection" in the Main Gallery will feature work by the renowned Ojai photographer.

In the Lower Gallery, "Simi Valley, the Way It Was" shows photographs taken in the early 1900s by John Sparhawk Appleton, local farmer and amateur photographer Amateur Photographer is the title of a British photography magazine, published weekly by IPC Media, a Time Warner subsidiary. The magazine provides articles on equipment reviews, photographic technique, and profiles of professional photographers. .

The public is invited to an opening reception for both exhibits between 7 and 9 tonight at the center, 3050 Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Ave. The galleries are also open noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is always free.

Bristol's works include World War II battle scenes photographed during his duty as a Navy lieutenant serving under Edward Steichen Edward Steichen (March 27, 1879–March 25, 1973) was an American photographer, painter, and art gallery and museum curator, born in Bivange, Luxembourg. His family moved to the United States in 1881 and he became a naturalized citizen in 1900. . Also on view are depictions of California's oil history and photos taken in the West Indies West Indies, archipelago, between North and South America, curving c.2,500 mi (4,020 km) from Florida to the coast of Venezuela and separating the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. , Europe and Asia on assignment for Life and Fortune magazines.

Taken while touring with John Steinbeck, Bristol's pictures of migrant workers became known informally as "The Steinbeck Photos." This collection will complement the staging of "Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men

Farmer/photographer John Sparhawk Appleton came to Simi Valley from Massachusetts as a youth. He captured much of the area's development on glass negatives. The plates were found in a ranch building after the photographer's death and are now in the hands of his great-grandson, Bill Appleton, a corporate industrial photographer.

In recent years, Appleton has been working on the restoration and printing of the negatives, as well as researching the subjects of his great-grandfather's pictures.

"Of Mice and Men," produced by the Santa Paula Theater Center, will play weekends at the Simi Valley Cultural Center through Jan. 28. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. There is one Thursday performance at 8 p.m. Jan. 25. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, with discounts for groups of 10 or more.
