An account was opened using the tax refund check, authorities said. Four days later, Reeves opened an account with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Long Beach in the name of Energy Capital, an oil company he claimed was worth $6 million and had investors, authorities said. Authorities said Kellum and Reeves spoke several times with employees of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in an attempt to convince them that Buss was investing in Energy Capital, and that funds from the deposit of the tax refund check be transferred into the Energy account controlled by Reeves. Authorities said Kellum pretended to be the son of Buss during conversations with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter officials and claimed to be a senior vice president and scout for the Lakers. During a Feb. 2 interview with the FBI, Reeves admitted knowing the check was stolen, according to an FBI affidavit.
