Web Media Guide NewsDirectory.com Provides Statistics And Links

As the millennium approaches, over 2,500 newspapers throughout the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  have now established public Web sites with actively updated information online.

Of these newspapers, 1,091 are dailies. This contrasts with March 1995, when only seven U.S. newspapers were publishing online. These figures are provided by Bob Poulsen, President of online guide NewsDirectory.com, and are based on the number of links maintained at the NewsDirectory.com Web site over the last five years.

"An interesting picture develops when we study our database of newspaper links", states Poulsen. "When our site first hit the Internet in March, 1995, only seven U.S. newspapers were known to exist online. These were San Francisco Chronicle The San Francisco Chronicle was founded in 1865 as The Daily Dramatic Chronicle by teenage brothers Charles de Young and Michael H. de Young.[2] The paper grew along with San Francisco to become the largest circulation newspaper on the West Coast of the , San Francisco Examiner The San Francisco Examiner is a U.S. daily newspaper. Over the years we've seen more and more U.S. newspapers accept and embrace the Web as a compliment to their print versions. Today we count 2,523 U.S. newspapers on the Web, with more papers discovered daily. For instance, just last week NewsDirectory.com added forty-two additional U.S. newspaper links; and I believe that most major daily papers can now be found online. Our site at http://www.newsdirectory.com provides all these links and more."

Poulsen goes on to give more statistics based on the NewsDirectory.com database. To be listed in the database, a Web site must be maintained by a paper-printed publication and offer regularly updated content in English. These examples show the extent of Internet penetration by print media:

U.S. Newspaper Sites: 2,523

Canada Newspaper Sites: 268

U.K. Newspaper Sites: 250

Newspaper Sites in All Other Countries: 456

Number of Countries with English-Language Newspapers Online: 126

In addition, Poulsen states that 406 U.S. college newspapers can be found online, along with 1,110 U.S. local broadcast television stations and 4,723 magazines worldwide. Links to all of these sites are recorded and regularly verified by NewsDirectory.com, which provides Web visitors free access to its easy-to-navigate media guide.
