2,500 LOG ON TO KID PORN BY ACCIDENT; Spread of vile images grows.

Byline: BY LEAH YEUNG

MORE than 2,500 people viewed child pornography Child pornography is the visual representation of minors under the age of 18 engaged in sexual activity or the visual representation of minors engaging in lewd or erotic behavior designed to arouse the viewer's sexual interest.  on the internet by accident last year, a watchdog said yesterday.

Hotline.ie warned its analysts were seeing photos and videos of the rape and sexual abuse of children more frequently than in previous years.

The material being brought to the attention of Hotline.ie is also more disturbing, with the finding of such images up by 62 per cent since 2006.

However, the number may be much higher as staff are worried the public rarely report illegal content.

Paul Durrant, of the Internet Service Providers Association The Internet Service Providers Association, or ISPA, is a British body representing providers of Internet Services.

ISPA was established in 1995 as the first trade association for ISPs, promoting competition, self-regulation and progress within the internet industry.
of Ireland which runs Hotline.ie, said: "Some of the most disturbing material last year was on peer-to-peer P2P See peer-to-peer and point-to-point.  services.

"Many children use file-sharing and I appeal to the public to help rid P2P of such material by reporting suspiciously named files when they come across them."

The ISPAI ISPAI Internet Service Providers Association of India  also warned a combined and cohesive effort by all those in the internet industry was needed to keep child porn off Irish servers but many providers have refused to join ISPAI.

This means they do not formally commit to a code of practice and ethics.

Although none of the 2,590 reports of suspected illegal images were being hosted on Irish internet servers, Mr Durrant accredits that to the work of ISPAI members and gardai which has deterred paedophiles from using Irishbased internet facilities.

The types of illegal content which should be reported to Hotline.ie includes porn, grooming, sex tourism, child trafficking, and unsolicited un·so·lic·it·ed

Hotline.ie is committed to ensuring the internet is not used for child porn.
