1st group of Miyakejima residents visit home.

Some 350 residents of Miyakejima Island completed their brief visits home Tuesday, one year after they evacuated the island following volcanic eruptions volcanic eruptions

discharging of fumes, dust and lava from volcanoes. They have damaging potential in addition to those of being physically overpowering by the lava flow or the ash or dust fallout.

The group, the first of about 1,600 islanders expected to make the trip to the island on five occasions up to Sept. 26, left Tokyo port Monday night on a chartered boat, reached the island at around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and arrived back at the port late afternoon.

During the six-hour stay, they were allowed to take two bags of belongings back to Tokyo.

A second group is scheduled to set sail (Naut.) to unfurl or spread the sails; hence, to begin a voyage.

The Tokyo metropolitan government ordered the evacuation of all 3,850 Miyakejima residents Sept. 1 last year after eruptions of the 813-meter Mt. Oyama on the island.

The island, about 200 kilometers south of the capital, is under the jurisdiction of Tokyo.
