The chick hatched from one of the five eggs laid by Mei Mei earlier this month at the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center. Mei Mei was presented in October 2000 as a gift from China, and last year produced chicks with her mate Yu Yu, who hatched at the center in May 1999 as the first crested ibis to be produced in Japan through artificial insemination artificial insemination, technique involving the artificial injection of sperm-containing semen from a male into a female to cause pregnancy.
