Prior to arriving at 1st Pacific Bank of California The Bank of California was founded in San Francisco, California on July 5, 1864 by William Chapman Ralston. It was the first commercial bank in the Western United States, the second-richest bank in the nation, and considered instrumental in developing the American Old West. , Semrau served as regional manager of First Centennial Bank of Escondido, where he was responsible for the bank's commercial portfolio of $50 million in business loans and a staff of four business bankers. He has served as vice president of several other banks in Wisconsin and California.

Semrau graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of arts degree in history and California State University Enrollment
 Sacramento with a master's degree in finance and marketing.
