1st IKEA Furniture Manufacturing Facility in United States to Open on May 21 in Danville, VA by Subsidiary Swedwood.


DANVILLE, Va. -- Swedwood, the industrial group within IKEA IKEA Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd (Swedish home furnishings retailer founder's initials and location) , the world's leading home furnishings retailer, today announced that its Danville, Virginia Danville is an independent city in Virginia, bounded by Pittsylvania County, Virginia and Caswell County, North Carolina. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Danville with Pittsylvania county for statistical purposes under the Danville, Virginia Metropolitan  manufacturing facility will open officially at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. A formal ceremony will include remarks by Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and local government officials, as well as Swedwood and IKEA representatives.

The 930,000 square-foot Swedwood factory was built on 209 acres in Cane Creek Centre, a joint industrial park for the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County (approximately 50 miles north of Greensboro, NC). The factory will be the Swedish company's first furniture production location in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , and will produce a variety of wood-based IKEA products such as EXPEDIT bookshelves, LACK coffee and side tables, and BESTA modular entertainment systems. By May 21, more than 175 coworkers will have joined the IKEA/Swedwood family.
