Daily News photographer Hans Gutknecht and copy editor Michael McGarr won first-place honors in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Press Club's 47th annual Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Journalism Awards contest.

Several other Daily News staff members also were recognized for outstanding efforts in the competition.

Gutknecht won the top honor in the single topic photo essay category with a series of pictures titled, ``Spread of Street Gangs.'' The judges commented: ``Excellent Continuity. Start to finish, a full story with no need of words. Begins with youth and machismo machismo

Exaggerated pride in masculinity, perceived as power, often coupled with a minimal sense of responsibility and disregard of consequences. In machismo there is supreme valuation of characteristics culturally associated with the masculine and a denigration of

Copy editor McGarr got first place for headline writing with this: ``Cops Say 10-4 to 3/12.''

The judges commented: ``Creative, catchy - short and sweet - perfect! This headline is a great play on numbers and their meaning.''

Said Butler, ``In each instance, the winners recognize the Daily News' focus on Los Angeles and telling the L.A. story in a way that captures and serves readers.''

The Daily News, which competes against Southern California's largest newspapers with more than 100,000 circulation, also won several other honors. The awards were announced at a banquet Saturday night.

Reporters Beth Barrett and Rick Orlov won second place in the hard news category with a story headlined ``L.A. Water Gate?''

Also winning second-place awards were Chris Weinkopf for signed commentary and Mariel Garza for column writing.

Patrick O'Connor Patrick J. O'Connor is a long-serving alderman in Chicago's City Council. O'Connor represents the 40th Ward on the North Side. Glenn Whipp won second place for film reviews.

Graphic artist Jon Gerung got second place in design for ``Goodbye Gipper.''

The Daily News also received an honorable mention in the investigative series category for the ``Terror in Our Streets'' articles on Southern California's gang problem. Beth Barrett was the lead reporter.
