Press Club's 47th annual Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Several other Daily News staff members also were recognized for outstanding efforts in the competition. Gutknecht won the top honor in the single topic photo essay category with a series of pictures titled, ``Spread of Street Gangs.'' The judges commented: ``Excellent Continuity.
