Singer had nominated Martinez to the commission in May 1994, in part because of the lack of Latino representation on the panel. Martinez is part owner (Law) one of several owners or tenants in common. See Joint tenant, under Joint.

``I need to spend more time with my wife,'' Martinez said, referring to his wife of 51 years, Petra. ``I've reached the age of 78 and I've been promising my wife I would retire. I've enjoyed serving the community, but my wife deserves more of my time.''

Singer said he will nominate another local Latino leader, George Salas, to replace Martinez.

Salas, 59, has been a resident of the Antelope Valley since 1982. Salas retired from NASA NASA: see National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
