1ST IMMIGRANT; MEMORIAL.THE grave of the first Irish immigrant to pass through Ellis Island in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of has been marked by a Celtic cross. This cross was in memory of Annie Moore, from Cobh, Co Cork, who arrived in America as a 17-year-old on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. 1892. When she died 80 years ago the mother of 10 was laid to rest in an unmarked grave, which was only found two years ago. She has become a symbol for the hundreds of thousands of Irish who have followed in her footsteps. Her family joined religious leaders on Saturday at the Queens cemetery where she is buried. |
