1IN FIVE SALADS AS SALTY AS A BIG MAC; THE FAST FOOD FAILURES.

TWENTY per cent of ready-made salads contain as much salt as a Big Mac and fries, a study reveals.

The 3g figure is half the recommended daily allowance. Two McDonald's salads contain a day's recommended intake.

Yesterday's disclosures will stun healthy eaters who believe salads are low in salt, which is linked to high blood pressure, the major cause of strokes and heart attacks.

Heart expert Professor Graham MacGregor, chairman of Consensus Action on Salt and Health who carried out the research, said: "I believe the public is being misled. How can manufacturers justify selling salads that contain more than half, or in some cases all, of the recommended limit of salt in a single serving? There is no way they can be described as a healthy option.

"They should be labelled with the salt content per serving. If it's more than 3g, they should carry a health warning."

Eighty one high street salads were tested. One in five were found to contain half the recommended daily salt intake, the same as a Big Mac and large fries. The saltiest was McDonald's crispy chicken ranch salad, plus low fat Newman's Own light Caesar dressing and croutons, with 6.2g of salt.

Second was McDonald's crispy chicken salad with pasta at 5.9g per portion.

Four in 10 salads had more than 2g of salt. Almost half had no salt or sodium information on labelling. Only two contained less than 0.5g of salt. The healthiest was Burger King LA garden salad A garden salad is a salad consisting of lettuce and simple vegetables found in a small vegetable garden such as tomatoes, carrots, onions, and dressing.  with 0.08g of salt.

In 1716 Henry Hoare, William Wogan, Robert Witham and Patrick Cockburn decided to open the Westminster Public Infirmary
, London, said the main reason for high salt in salads is that it is often added to chicken when it is cooked. Adding dressings and croutons also ups the amount.

A home-prepared salad with cold roast chicken and a dressing without salt or mustard contains less than 0.3g of salt.

McDonald's said: "We offer a range of options in the Salads Plus range. The salt content varies from 0.25g per portion upwards. All dressings and croutons are in sachets so customers can add as much as they choose."
