1999 SEMI 'Copper-Critical' Survey Top-line Results To Be Released At SEMICON Southwest '99.

NATICK, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1999--

Majority of Respondents Predict Copper-Based

Semiconductors In Full Production by 2001/02

Launched at SEMICON SEMICON Semiconductors Equipment and Material International Conference  West in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  by SEMI and Philips Analytical, the 1999 SEMI "Copper-Critical" Survey polled more than 265 semiconductor industry participants to gain their views and perspectives on industry and technology trends associated with the use of copper interconnect (1) To attach one device to another.

technology. All survey data was collected and tabulated by an independent third-party research organization to ensure accuracy and respondent In Equity practice, the party who answers a bill or other proceeding in equity. A distinguished advisory board, including representatives from semiconductor manufacturers, equipment producers, SEMI and International SEMATECH SEMATECH Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology , developed the survey.

--The results point to optimism about the overall acceptance of using copper in the near future. Of respondents, 63.7 % predict that copper-based semiconductors will become volume, full-production products (i.e., 10% of total semiconductor shipments) in the 2001/02 timeframe.

--In addition, 76.8% of respondents think the current level of acceptance of copper-based semiconductors among semiconductor customers is moderate to high, with 41.6% of this group indicating the current level of acceptance is above-average to high.

--When asked about the principal barriers to the acceptance of copper among chip consumers, 39% cite "performance" as a major concern, while 32.2% say "price" is an issue. Topping the list of principal barriers is "availability," as indicated by 46.6% of respondents.

--The respondents comprise a broad-based audience including semiconductor manufacturers (30.2%), materials manufacturers (11%), semiconductor equipment manufacturers (8.3%), independent R&D laboratory researchers (4.2%), industry consortium members (1.5%), and others. Among these, most respondents were either in R&D (23.1%) or process development (21.2%).

A full report on the results of the survey will be presented during a Copper Critical Readiness Briefing at SEMICON Southwest 99 in Austin, Texas, on October 19, 1999. Questions on technology trends will be answered, such as when respondents expect to ship their first copper-based tools/materials and what materials are being used in copper processes for interlayer Noun 1. interlayer - a layer placed between other layers

dielectrics and plug material. In addition, respondents will rate their companies' readiness for volume manufacturing in various process areas such as dielectric dielectric (dī'ĭlĕk`trĭk), material that does not conduct electricity readily, i.e., an insulator (see insulation). A good dielectric should also have other properties: It must resist breakdown under high voltages; it should not  deposition, etch/polish stops, barrier deposition, and copper CMP CMP (cytidine monophosphate): see cytosine.
