1999 Felton Media Scholars Announced; Program Develops Skills to Critically Assess `What You Watch, See and Read in the Media'.


WELLESLEY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1999--

W.  today announced the 17 media professionals and educators named to its Felton Media Literacy Media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. Felton Scholars engage in a semester-long, intensive course on a range of media-related topics, including: news and democracy; violence in the media; media economics; advertising; public relations' role in news; and issues around teaching about the media in college and secondary schools. The program was founded and is supported by prominent Los Angeles producer/director, Norman Felton, whose pioneering background in television includes such shows as Studio One, Dr. Kildare and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Naming only its second class of Scholars this year, the Felton program explores the intersection between the fields of media studies and education. Professor Renee Hobbs directs the media literacy project at Babson College; 1999's participants were selected from applicants throughout New England and New York New York, state, United States

"Media literacy is often defined as the process of asking questions about what you watch, see and read," said Hobbs. "With the explosion of media in every part of our lives, it's vital that we understand all forms of media and teach people to think critically about all their sources of information -- TV, newspapers, the Internet, radio, even display media."

With the completion of their semester work, Felton Scholars conduct staff development workshops in businesses, community organizations, schools and civic groups on critically analyzing media and the technologies used for information delivery in contemporary society.

The Felton Scholars come from distinguished backgrounds in media studies, education and media production. Participants for the 1999 program are:

Eliot Bamford, Manchester, Mass., a graphic design professional recently transplanted from England.

Diane Barry, Dedham, Mass., a senior communications officer at the Education Development Center in Newton.

Laura Carlyle, Sandwich, Mass., a high school journalism teacher at Sandwich High and a former professional reporter and editor.
