1996-'97 HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : PACIFIC.

The league trophy is on display at Hoover, but the road to this season's title winds a little east of there.

``If we want to win the league title we've got to go through Pasadena,'' said first-year Muir head coach Paul Hoover This article is about the poet. For the baseball player, see Paul Hoover (baseball).
Paul Hoover (born 1946) is an American poet and editor born in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
. ``I really believe it's going to come down to us and Pasadena.''

The rest of the league will have something to say about that. But there's no denying the Bulldogs and Mustangs are the deepest in talent in a talent-rich league.

and point guard Joe Bakhoum also have attracted a lot of attention.

But Hoover won't give up the title easily. And Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  seems poised to make its annual run for the league's top spot, despite its lack of height.

And while Glendale and Arcadia don't seem playoff material, they will sport solid clubs.

``The Pacific League is one of the best in the area,'' Hoover coach Kirt Kohlmeier said. ``This league is always good from top to bottom.''

CRESCENTA VALLEY

VITAL STATS: 1995-96 record: 18-8. League finish: third. Playoffs: first round. Top players: G Kenny Pritchett, 5-9, Jr.; G Danny Morris, 5-11, Sr.; F Derek Dawson, 6-3, Jr.; G Andrius Ragauskas, 6-0, Sr.

OUTLOOK: Head coach John Goffredo refers to his team as The Smurfs, and it's not hard to see why. His tallest two players are Dawson and senior Adam Reynolds at 6-3.

``This is the smallest team in school history,'' said Goffredo, who in his 26th year as head coach certainly should know.

Short, however, does not mean untalented Adj. 1. untalented - devoid of talent; not gifted

Goffredo said Ragauskas could lead the league in scoring. Pritchett is all-league material. And Dawson, a transfer from Maranatha who played his freshman season at Muir, is a potential star at forward.

``He's a really good player,'' Goffredo said.

The Falcons were 23-8 this summer.

VITAL STATS: 1995-96 record: 16-10. League finish: first. Playoffs: second round. Top players: F Andy Russell Andy Russell can refer to:

OUTLOOK: The Tornadoes won their first league title since 1984 last year. And head coach Kohlmeier sees no reason they can't repeat if his players play their roles.

Hull (17 ppg, 6 rpg) and Russell (11 ppg, 11 rpg) are returning all-leaguers who will be counted on to continue their scoring leadership. Avenassian takes over a starting role at point guard after being Kohlmeier's sixth man last year.

Younger players will be asked to step up an fill in around the veterans.

GLENDALE

VITAL STATS: 1995-96 record: 6-17. League finish: fifth (tie). Playoffs: did not qualify. Top players: F John Caro, 6-1, Sr.; F Armen Kazaryan, 6-3, Sr.; G Tomik Iranosian, 6-1, Fr.

OUTLOOK: The Dynamiters have a new head coach this year, Steve Snodgress, a former assistant to previous head man Bob Davidson.

And Snodgress says his club fits a profile common to high school programs - it is talented but small.

``We have decent guard play, but the front line will need to step up,'' Snodgress said.

Kazaryan is the top returning scorer and averaged eight points and six rebounds last year. Iranosian, just a freshman, may be able to help there. The youngster averaged 10 points a contest during the summer.

OUT OF AREA TEAMS

Pasadena will be big with the 6-6 Gladden, 6-8 Brooke Ewing, 6-5 Isham Eldridge and 6-5 Karland Reed in the lineup.

Muir, coming off a Division III-AA championship run last spring, has a new coach in Hoover, who plans to have his Mustangs play a running game.

Arcadia hopes to rebuild behind returning starters Jason Tang and DeMario Franklin.

SANTA FE Santa Fe, city, Argentina
Santa Fe, city (1991 pop. 341,000), capital of Santa Fe prov., NE Argentina, a river port near the Paraná, with which it is connected by canal.

It's Cathedral coach Oscar Leong's opinion that the Santa Fe League race is already over.

In case you didn't notice, talent-rich Bell-Jeff won.

``The real race is for second,'' Leong said.

It would be hard to argue. All but one starter is back from last year's league title Guards team. And they're all a year older and rising in stature on the prep all-star lists.

Athlon Magazine ranked him No. 22 among high school juniors. Making the top 40 of Athlon's sophomore list is Guards teammate Kent Dennis, a 6-2 sophomore point guard who averaged 14 points and four assists as a freshman.

And there's more.

That race for second shapes up as a clash between Leong's Phantoms and La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. Mary Star and Murphy could push for playoff spots.

Salesian and St. Genevieve will also try to crack the league's upper tier.

OUTLOOK: Head coach Eli Essa is missing just one piece from last year's team, 6-5 all-league post man Elihu Cobb, who was expelled from school for disciplinary reasons. Otherwise, the Guards are ready to pick up where they left off when they lost 63-58 to Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

``St. Genevieve will bang with Murphy, Salesian and Mary Star for fourth place,'' Van Grinsven said.

The top returning scorer is Padilla, who averaged eight points per game.

With no player reaching 6 feet in height, the Valiants will struggle on the boards but will be speedy up and down the court. They also will have a new on-campus gymnasium, which should generate enthusiasm.

FRONTIER

With most of the cast back from a team that made it to the Division III-AA semifinals last season, the Moorpark Musketeers seem ready for even better things this season.

Unfortunately, the road to greater glory travels - as usual - through the homecourt of the Santa Clara Saints and their venerable head coach, Lou Cvijanovich Lou Cvijanovich was the boys basketball coach for Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, California from 1958-1999. He is the winningest high school basketball coach in California history, with 829 wins. .

``Oh . . . I don't remember,'' Cvijanovich said. ``It was a long time ago.''

Long time ago as in probably before some of his Saints' current opponents were born.

Nonetheless, the Saints seem more vulnerable than usual this year. Their best player, Division I prospect Jeff Lacefield, a 6-5 guard, will miss the season with an injured in·jure

In Lacefield's absence, Moorpark junior forward Kevin Lawrence may be the league's best player.

``Lawrence is probably the player to watch,'' said Calabasas coach Bill Bellatty.

Calabasas will showcase guards Ryan Coleman Ryan Coleman is a child actor from the Nickelodeon series All That. He was originally the runner-up in the "R U All That" competition only losing to Christina Kirkman; but soon joined the cast in the middle of ninth season. Nordhoff and Malibu will struggle to keep pace with the rest.

MOORPARK

VITAL STATS: 1995-96 record: 19-11. League finish: Second. Playoffs: Semifinals. Top players: F Kevin Lawrence, 6-6, Jr.; G Keith Donahue, 6-2, Jr.; G Kalani Ferreria, 6-2, Sr.; F Andrew Carlson, 6-4, Jr.; G Todd Tomlinson, 5-10, Fr.

OUTLOOK: The Musketeers are older and wiser for their strong showing last year.

But are they strong enough to challenge perennial champion Santa Clara?

Head coach Tim Bednar thinks so.

``We are,'' Bednar said. ``I believe it and the kids believe it.''

Lawrence (16ppg, 8 rpg) is one of the league's leading offensive threats. He, Donahue (9 ppg, 4 rpg) and point guard Ferreria are returning starters. Carlson, another junior, is also in the running to start on an experienced squad that nonetheless may start just one senior.

Tomlinson, a sharp-shooting freshman, is expected to give the Musketeers a 3-point threat off the bench.

CALABASAS

VITAL STATS: 1995-96 record: 15-12. League finish: third (tie). Playoffs: Second round. Top players: G Ryan Coleman, 6-2, Sr.; G Bobby Baumann, 5-10, Sr.; C Spencer Breen, 6-3, Sr.; G Spencer Harrington, So.

OUTLOOK: While his team isn't favored to win league, head coach Bellatty figures the Coyotes should at least be playoff bound.

And he's looking to guards Coleman and Baumann to take them there.

Coleman (17.8 ppg, 7.5 apg), a three-year all-league performer, is the team's point guard and biggest offensive threat. And Bellatty says Baumann (12.5 ppg, 3.2 apg) is vastly improved.

``This is the best guard combination I've had,'' said Bellatty, who begins his 11th year as Calabasas head man.

``He'll be taking over next year at point guard,'' Bellatty said.

NON-AREA TEAMS

The absence of Lacefield doesn't exactly leave the cupboard bare at Santa Clara. Seniors Brad Beeson (6-8) and Skye Peterson (6-5) give the Saints plenty of height. Cvijanovich also expects good things from 6-1 senior guard Peter Lee.

  • Rio Hondo (California), a tributary of the Los Angeles River in the U.S. state of California.
League games and nine straight league titles, are strong, as usual, and will be led by Moore.

Head coach Tom Hofman can't say enough good things about the tall, talented junior who averaged 14 points and six rebounds last year.

``Matt is playing phenomenally,'' Hofman said. ``He's one of the best big men in the state. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised.''

Hyun (7 ppg, 4 apg) is a returning all-league point guard. Riddell, Lindsey and Mieding will be the other starters but many will play.

``I think one of our strengths is we have an excellent backup at every position,'' Hofman said.

OUTLOOK: As usual, the free-lance Mounties have different goals than other teams.

While others strive to win league championships that guarantee playoff spots, the Mounties must seek artificial goals they feel will give them a shot at being selected for postseason play.

``The only way we can guarantee ourselves a playoff spot is by winning 15 games,'' co-head coach Howard Abrams said.

Despite their youth - the club has just one senior - the Mounties seem ready to accomplish that.

Steryo, Clark and Brock are returning contributors to last year's glory. Clark started at off guard the last half of his sophomore year and is an intense defender and acute ballhandler.

Steryo is a 3-point specialist who was called on for some instant offense last season. Brock also can shoot.

Bentley is a transfer from Chatsworth High School who will be looked at to provide some of the muscle under the basket lost to graduation last year. Cohen and Bowens are also transfers, Cohen from Crossroads, where he backed up point guard Baron Davis Baron Walter Louis Davis (born April 13 1979, in Los Angeles, California) is an American professional basketball player currently starting at point guard for the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Bowens is very fast and he and Clark will be counted on to work the Mounties' intense press.

OUTLOOK: Spirits coach Allen Adams Allender Steele Adams, known as Allen Adams, (16 February 1946 – 5 September 1990), was a British Labour politician.

Adams was Member of Parliament (MP) for Paisley from 1979 to 1983, then for Paisley North from 1983 until his death in 1990 at the age of 44.
hopes the biggest lineup in the High Desert League, featuring returning league MVP Foster and first-team all-leaguer Gaeta, will be enough to hold off Desert for the title.

``If we utilize our size, we will be suc`cessful,'' Adams predicts.

Foster, Gaeta and Julius all averaged more than seven rebounds per game last year, suggesting the Spirits will control the boards this season.

SMALL SCHOOLS

Antelope Vally Christian hopes to repeat the success of last year's 25-2 season. Guard Aaron Nurse (17.5 ppg), forward Brown (13.7 ppg, 12.3 rpg) and guard John Storey Several people have been called John Storey

Eric Tisdale (13 ppg, 12 rpg) leads a group of 11 returning players at L.A. Lutheran, which hopes to contend in the Heritage League this season.

Providence, Holy Martyrs, Buckley and Oakwood hope to get back into contention for the Liberty League title.

Holy Martyrs, always tough, will be weakened by the loss of sophomore center Schant Choulakian to knee surgery, but has a solid performer back in senior guard Vicken Ohanian.

Buckley, with former Providence assistant Dan Haasch in charge, has a rising star in sophomore forward George Wrighster George Fredrick Wrighster (born April 1, 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American football tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League. Cambell Hall finished second last year and hopes to do as well again with a young squad led by returning starter Kevin Pullinger, a 6-3 senior forward.
