1996 Black Enterprise Auto Guide.

In the automotive industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide. , 1995 is proving to be a mixed year. And 1996 portends more of the same (or less, as the case may be). Sales are down compared to an outstanding 1994, but the market is still stronger than the previous few years.

What this means for the buyers is more and often better choices. Production capacity is up, meaning there are plenty of vehicles out there that must be sold. Hence, there are bargains.

The hot spot has been in trucks, primarily sport-utility vehicles (SUVs). They are in such high demand, manufacturers seem to be raising prices with abandon. Competition is certainly improving the breed, but demand means prices (and profits) are also at record height. If you want to follow the SUV trend, you're simply going to get less value for your money than in a passenger car.

Meanwhile, technology is bringing the cost of many worthwhile features down. With competition heating up, expect that trend to continue well into and beyond the 1997 model year.

 7-SERIES

After having introduced a new 7-Series sedan last fall, there are still more changes for 1996. The 740iL gets an increase in its V-8 engine, from 4.0 to 4.5 liters, improving torque and low-end performance. Horsepower will increase minimally from the 1995 rating of 282.

Traction control becomes standard on the 740i. A new feature that may be a first in the industry comes to the 750iL: a heated steering wheel!

The 740 is available as the 740i or the 740iL, the "L" denoting a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase wheel·base

The 750iL is the long wheel base car with some added features, including a 322-horsepower V-12 engine, Prices range from around $60,000 to just above $90,00O.

MERCEDES-BENZ E320

Leading off a new generation of E-class sedan, the E320 retains little but the engine from the previous model. With this car, Mercedes-Benz finally joins the modern world by offering such mechanical features as rack-and-pinion steering and a double wishbone wishbone

front suspension, items competitors have had for more than a decade.

Mercedes is also adding length, more than two inches overall and more than an inch to the wheelbase. The idea is to gain interior room to maintain a competitive pace. Although there won't be any changes to the engine, the transmission is a new five-speed automatic. Also following the competition by a decade, this transmission engine design, bringing its first V-6 to the table. Meanwhile, a V-8-powered E420 will arrive part-way though the model year. Styling remains Mercedes traditional--a bit stodgy stodg·y

JAGUAR XJS The Jaguar XJ-S (later the Jaguar XJS) is a luxury grand tourer produced by the British manufacturer Jaguar Cars. The XJ-S replaced the legendary Jaguar E-Type (or XK-E) in September 1975, and was based on the XJ saloon.

Jaguar's XJS is nearing the end of its very long run. Model year 1996 will be the last for this car. An all-new replacement vehicle, the first designed jointly with owner Ford Motor Co., arrives in 1997.

V-12 engine is off again for this final model year. Also gone is the coupe version, leaving just one model of the XJS left to carry on: the six-cylinder convertible. The 4.0-liter inline-6 has 237 horsepower, enough to push this car along at a reasonable clip. But the V-12 engine will be missed. When the replacement comes in a bit more than a year, it will have Jaguar's first modem V-8.

Designed more than 20 years ago the XJS offers Old World style and charm. The metal curves, the wood is genuine and the leather aromatic.

Excess weight that is a problem in acceleration and fuel economy does help to make the Jaguar's ride smooth. Although comfort is better than most competitors, handling is now a bit below par for the class. Prices haven't been set for the 1996 model year, but the 1995 equivalent ended near $62,000.

CHRYSLER LHS The Chrysler LHS was a full-size, front wheel drive car based on the Chrysler LH platform, as well as Chrysler's flagship model, from 1994-2001.

Its identical twin, the New Yorker, is being dropped. (Thus ending the longest continuously running nameplate on the market today.) New Yorker fans will find the LHS nearly the same, and a new option will be the bench seat that made the New Yorker a (marginal) six-passenger sedan. Most are controlled by switches on the garage wall, as well as by remote controls carried in the garage owner's cars. . There's an improved sound system with a combined compact disc and cassette unit along with a new integral electric antenna mounted in the rear window.

Standard equipment is quite plentiful. All LHS models include leather seats, 16- inch aluminum wheels, power seats, automatic Climate control, traction control and a host of other amenities.

With the 214 horsepower, 3.5-liter 24-valve V-6 engine, acceleration is quite adequate. This falls short of the V-8 engines found in rivals from Cadillac and Lincoln, but so does the $30,255 price tag. Inside, there's plenty of room for people and cargo to ride in luxurious comfort.

ACURA TL The Acura TL is a mid-size luxury car from Honda's Acura brand. It was introduced in 1996 to supplant the Acura Vigor and was a rebadged Japan-market Honda Inspire sedan until the third-generation version.

Acura ACURA Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy  recently introduced this all-new car to replace the slow-selling! Vigor. Although it remains similar to the Vigor, the TL is larger and includes a more powerful version.

Starting off is the 2.5TL with a 176-horsepower five-cylinder engine. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, tilt steering column steering column n (Aut) → colonne f de direction

Acura's TL cars are competent in every respect. However, they are less sporty than past Acura offerings. The most obvious indication is that this is the first car from the Acura brand not offered with a manual transmission. Prices start at $27,900 and top out at $35,500 for a 3.5TL with Al the options.

BENTLEY AZURE Bentley Motors Limited has produced two convertible models called Azure:

With 1995 production limited to just 118 worldwide (on 26 of which will be brought to the U.S.), it's impossible to just purchase one from--dare we say--dealer stock. If you wait until next year, production will rise enough to provide the "colonies" with 70 more.

Then, of course, is the one small factor of financial wherewithal. You'll have to come up with $319,000, plus taxes, to actually purchase this most exclusive of motorcars.

LINCOLN TOWN CAR The Lincoln Town Car is a rear wheel drive full-size luxury sedan and serves as the flagship of Ford's Lincoln luxury car division. Often referred to as a traditional American luxury sedan, the Town Car features a V8 engine, rear wheel drive, very generous exterior and interior

Lincoln's huge rear-drive luxury sedan is observing the division's 75th anniversary with a Diamond Anniversary model. Virtually dripping with luxury, this special edition includes supple leather seating surfaces with a distinctive anniversary emblem.

If you choose the top-of-the-line Cartier model, for 1996 two features are added: real wood on the instrument panel and rear-seat vanity mirrors.

While the Town Car seems a throwback throwback

to times past, with its huge size and square shape, it brings a host of modern technology to the table. Every Lincoln Town Car is powered by a 210-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 engine linked to a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. A dual airbag supplemental restraint system and a four-wheel disc anti-lock braking system An anti-lock braking system (ABS) (translated from German, Antiblockiersystem) is a system on motor vehicles which prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The purpose of this is to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, in some  head a long list of standard safety features.

You can't achieve sporty handling in the largest Lincoln. But you do Let that creamy soft ride and ultra quiet interior that may never we attained by the likes of Lexus or Mercedes. Starting around $37,000, you won't get more comfort at twice the price.

CADILLAC SEVILLE The Cadillac Seville is a luxury car that was manufactured occasionally by the Cadillac division of American automaker General Motors as a specialty model in the 1950s and 60s, and a regular production vehicle from 1975 to 2004.  STS (Synchronous Transport Signal) The electrical equivalent of the SONET optical signal. In SDH, the European counterpart of SONET, STS is known as STM (Synchronous Transport Module).

Cadillac is advancing the technology of its cars in sometimes subtle ways. New developments in controlling the suspension with computers gives the STS (Seville Touring Sedan) excellent road feel without harming that soft Cadillac ride. The STS actually rides better than the SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) See laser sintering and 3D printing.  (Seville Luxury Sedan), making it the easy choice for those who can afford one.

The most obvious visual change for '96 is a revised dashboard. Although this adds to an attractive interior, the ergonomic function is actually a slight downgrade from the prior model. Overly large instruments can be hidden by the steering wheel, and the gear indicator light is so bright as to truly annoy.

Back to the plus side, dual-zone climate control is available to allow driver and front passenger to reach differing levels of comfort. A new option automatically turns on the windshield wipers

Meanwhile, you still have a choice of a rousing 275-horsepower V-8 in the SLS or an even more stirring 300 horsepower with the STS. Base prices are $42,995 and $47,495, respectively. Both include ample space for five passengers, a very smooth shifting transmission and responsive handling,

Previously called the Audi 90, this compact sedan is roughly the same size as last year's car, Although interior accommodations have been improved. Better yet, the driving character of the A4 places it much higher within its class. A 172-horsepower V-6 engine powers the front wheels, or all four wheels if you choose the $1,5000 Quattro option, Mated to that choice of either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. And beneath the fenders is an all-new front suspension that improves steering response and handling.

Inside, the Audi has a remarkably well-tailored interior that features exquisite fit-and-finish, generous use of real wood, and high-quality materials throughout. The overall shape is simply first rate. Only rear seat room is a disappointment.

A supple ride, strong acceleration, decent build quality and the newly improved handling add up to an extremely satisfying sedan. Prices should start around $26,000.

MITSUBISHI GALANT
For the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis, see Mitsubishi Lancer.

The Mitsubishi Galant is an automobile manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors since 1969. The name was derived from the French galant, meaning "chivalrous".

Despite promises of bringing a V-6 to this compact sedan, Mitsubishi has changed its mind. In the foreseeable future, the Galant This article is about the musical style. For the Mitsubishi automobile, see Mitsubishi Galant.

Retatively little changes for the 1996 model year. There is new upholstery, and more luxury options have been added, including leather, climate control and a power driver's seat.

Until Mitsubishi began a give-away lease promotion, Gallant sales languished because of its pleasant but bland nature. This is a car that really has no outstanding trait, falling in the middle of the pack in virtually all respects.

It's offered in a choice of three trim levels, S, ES and LS. Starting around $15,000, the S is quite a barebones car, although a couple thousand dollars in options can change that.

By the time you equip an LS with luxury features, you've entered into a $22,000-plus territory where larger, better cars are attainable.

BUICK RIVIERA The Buick Riviera was an automobile produced by Buick in the United States from the 1963 to 1999 model years, with 1,127,261 produced.[1]

To add some pizzazz, wood trim has been added surrounding the climate controls, radio and console trim plate. To personalize the car for two different drivers, what Buick calls a "Personal Choice Group," lets you put into memory settings for power door locks, delayed locking, security feedback, perimeter lighting and driver's memory.

Priced starting at $29,475, the Riviera offers a design treat rarely seen since the 1930s, along with modern day performance.

BMW 3281

BMW is becoming one of the fastest moving car companies, well ahead of its German rival. As it keeps introducing new models, it continually updates the older ones. Far from being ancient, the 325i (gets a larger engine this year, thus being transformed into the 328i).

This increase in engine displacement Engine displacement is defined as the total volume of air/fuel mixture an engine can draw in during one complete engine cycle; it is normally stated in cubic centimetres, litres or cubic inches.  to 2.8 liters (from 2.5) increases horsepower by a minor amount, but upgrades torque by a healthy 15 percent. The idea is to make this a more drivable car, particularly with an automatic transmission.

Other changes include adding an automatic temperature control and a feature that allows windows to be closed from outside with the key in the driver's door lock. A more potent Harmon-Kardon sound system is added to the option list.

Although interior room is less than generous for a sedan in this $33,000-plus range the trade-off is sporting character usually missing from near rivals. Interior appointments are mid-class but with a build quality that rarely leads to complaints. Those who choose a manual transmission will find the 328i can provide great performance and marvelous fun when the opportunity comes to drive the twisting mountain road.

MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a luxury compact car produced by the German division of Daimler, Mercedes-Benz. First introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 range, the C-Class was the most affordable model in the marque's lineup, until the 1997 arrival of the A-Class.

Although the C-Class is Mercedes' smallest sedan, this seems nearly as solid and sophisticated as the more costly models. Inside, the traditionally somber and Teutonic decor has been warmed up a bit with lots of wood trim. Busy ergonomics still seem strange in a modern era, but the overall appearance is pleasant enough. Room for passengers is quite a bit more cramped than for other luxury sedans in this price range, yet the C-Class does have considerably more room than the 190E it replaced.

Offered in 4-cylinder C220, 6-cylinder C280, and powerful C36 models, performance can range from marginal to exhilarating. The C220's 148-horsepower supplies unremarkable acceleration, Athough the car's chassis seems capable of much more. The C280's horsepower gives this sedan smooth performance. With the limited-edition C36, there is 268 horsepower on board for serious thrust.

In all models, ride quality is firm but relaxed, and handling is rock steady rather than nimble. And, as is expected, prices are premium, ranging from $32,000 to $50,000.

In Concours form, the ride quality gets even better, yet this hue sedan can also accelerate, steering and cornering like a thoroughbred. For $35,959, the DeVille is serious luxury. Starting at $40,495, the Concours is driving pleasure.

MERCURY SABLE The Mercury Sable was originally a mid-size car, and is now a full-size car created by the Ford Motor Company and sold under the semi-luxury Mercury brand. It is the mechanical counterpart of the Ford Taurus.

Power comes from a choice of two 3.0-liter V-6 engines. The first provides adequate acceleration for this car, while the 24-valve Duratec upgrades horsepower from a modest 145 to a sound 200. Most of this power comes at higher rpm, however, lacking that low-speed torque of the previous generation's 3.8-liter engine.

Inside, the layout is a novel approach to ergonomics with both misses and home runs. A flip-fold console is quite useful, yet blocks access to the ashtray and lighter. You can't have an in-dash CD player with this radio, but sound quality is agreeable.

Introduced as a limited production performance convertible in the Pontiac Star Chief model range during the 1957 model year, the Bonneville became its own series in 1958.

It has been a long, hard climb back for the U.S. auto industry, but there are few better examples of Detroit's renewed potential than the Pontiac Bonneville. Even in its most pedestrian form, the Bonneville SE offers contemporary, if a bit flamboyant styling, room for five (six in a pinch), and a strong, refined powertrain. BUICK LeSABRE The Buick LeSabre was a full-size car made by the Buick division of General Motors from 1959-2005. For many years, the LeSabre was considered the entry level full-size Buick, carrying the lowest base price in the Buick lineup.

When Japanese carmakers began winning over new buyers in huge numbers, Buick decided to focus on quality and reliability in order to reverse fortunes and stop the defection of loyal customers. The first model to succesfully embody this new philosophy was the LeSabre, and in the last five years, Buick's full-size front-drive sedan has been setting the standard for durability, reliability and quality in American family American Family is a photographic artwork exhibition by Renée Cox. Completely without flash and dazzle, the LeSabre has generated great popularity with a blend of conservative styling, comfortable ride and confident performance. Known as a company that has done too little with so Much, Mazda has suffered from an unfortunate marketing campaign. The company builds the type of quality products that would do Toyota or Honda proud, yet its sales fall into the same category as second echelon Japanese companies This is a list of companies from Japan. Note that 株式会社 can be (and frequently is) read both kabushiki kaisha and kabushiki gaisha (with or without a hyphen). See that article for more details.  like Mitsubishi.

For 1996, Mazda is aiming higher. A revised 626 gains some of the styling cues from its successful luxury sibling, the Millenia. It gels chrome around a more formal grille and a hood bulge.

Beneath the sheet metal is a choice of a satisfying, yet economical four-cylinder engine or a quite stout 24-valve V-6. The latter is among rare cars in this midsize class offered with either an automatic or manual transmission. This is just one feature that gives the 626 a more sporting character than its primary competitors.

With prices starting just over $15,000 and all the trimmings available at around $24,000, the 626 can be a very satisfying driver's car that-will also keep the family happy.

FORD TAURUS Not to be confused with Ford Taunus.

The Ford Taurus is currently a full-size, front-wheel drive or all wheel drive automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in North America.

By completely redoing the Taurus for '96, Ford is taking a chance by modifying the most popular car in America. Styling is nearly as radical as the original seemed in 1986 with an elliptical theme throughout the vehicle, including headlamps, grille, door handles, lower bumper openings, tailamps and even the fear window. Inside, the theme continues with an Integrated Control Panel that combines the audio and climate controls.

Under the skin, the Taurus has a long list of improvements, such as a more rigid unibody structure and a more sophisticated suspension. Powertrains include a revised 3.0-liter 145-horsepower V-6 as the standard engine and an all-new, 200-horsepower 3.0-liter DOHC DOHC Department of Health and Children (Ireland)

Taurus is available in a choice of four-door sedan or station wagon, both in either GL or LX trim level. A Taurus easily remains the most attractive station wagon on the market. Base prices begin at $19,150 of a GL sedan, climbing to $22,550 for the LX wagon.

But opt for the LSS trim level and now you've taken that step into a more compelling driving arena. Seating is reduced from six to five, but the new Aurora-type front buckets provide firm support. This comes in handy when you push the larger, 16-inch tires hard into a corner. The extra lumbar support is effective when you opt for the thrust of a 240-horsepower super-charged version of the 3.8-liter powerplant. All the while, a sophisticated automatic transmission assures tranqui shifts.

A surprising amount of room and luxury starts at $20,405, less than a host of Japanese compacts with less equipment. By the time you spend $26,010, you've got an LSS with nearly all the goodies.

PONTIAC GRAND PRIX The Pontiac Grand Prix is an automobile produced by the Pontiac division of General Motors.  arrives, and that will thankfully end the era of GM's door-mounted passive seat belts. The 1996 Grand Prix coupe is the last to offer this substandard safety device.

In standard trim, the sedan offers air conditioning, power windows and locks, six-passenger seating and a 160-horsepower V-6. With a careful selection of options, the Grand Prix can become an aggressive performance sedan. A larger 215-horsepower V-6 has bucket seats, sport suspension, dual exhaust and alloy wheels with low-profile tires to create a strong personality.

The coupe starts out with power mirrors, bucket seats, performance tires, dual exhaust, alloy wheels, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with remote controls for the radio and air conditioning. The 215-horsepower engine and and-lock brakes are optional.

SATURN WAGON

After charging hard out of the gate, sales finally began slipping for Saturn recently. Although dealer service is renowned, there is only so far you can go with aging products that offer a bit less than the competition.

For 1996, Saturn is sharpening the exterior styling of its compact sedan and wagon. Dent-resistant plastic body panels remain, although the roof, trunk lid and hood are now made of steel to reduce rattles. Traction control is now added to the option list of manual transmission models already available with the automatic). The company also claims a series of refinements to help quiet the notoriously noisy engine and improve ride quality.

Wagons are offered in choice of either SW1 ($11,995) or SW2 ($13,295) trim. The first gets a 100-horsepower four-cylinder engines while the second adds more features and a 124-horsepower version.

Redesigned last year, the interior still seems a bit inexpensive in materials and has some quirky ergonomic oddities. But the driving experience itself is now more quiet and improved.

HYUNDAI ACCENT

After bringing out the new Accent to replace the Excel last year, Hyundai is filling out the lineup a bit. The Accent GT is a two-door hatchback with a new 1. 5-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine. This one produces 105 horsepower, 13 more than the regular Accent. Also included is a sport-tuned suspension, revised gear ratios and alloy wheel with 175/70-14 performance tires. Other changes include standard front fog lamps, rear spoiler spoiler: see airplane.

Providing new car value is Hyundai's goal, and the Accent mostly delivers. This is a peppy car with more power than any other with a starting price of just over $8,000 for a 2-door and a $1,000 additional for the four-door model. By the time you crack $10,000, you've already got a fairly well equipped car. The GT may cost a thousand or two more than that.

You get a bit of wind, road and engine noise and the transmission doesn't shift as smoothly as other cars priced slightly higher. Hyundai is still fighting its low-quality image, but this car aoes appear to be reasonably well built.

is a Korean automaker that is trying to gradually grow its presence in the U.S. marketplace. Going on sale just a year ago, its first cars were a bit behind the times, lacking such important features as air bags. As the company adds dealers (now in about 40% of the U.S.), it is improving its cars.

In just its second year, the Sephia lan, significant improvements. All models (except for one California-only version) get dual air bags and a rather potent 122-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Four-wheel independent suspension provides a comfortable ride with agile handling.

A new interior design brings modern ergonomics to bear with such features as rotary controls for heat and ventilation plus bright, clear instruments. You'll face a bit more wind noise than some of the higher-priced competitors, but interior room is generally better.

Prices should start around $9,000 for the California RS model and break into five figures for those with more reasonable features. For around $12,000, it's nicely equipped.

Plymouth Acclaim, Chrysler's value division has had no vehide to compete in the midsize sedan market, an arena that serves as the bread and butter of the U.S. car market. To remedy this situadon, Plymouth will get its own version of the extremely successful Chrysler Circus/Dodge Stratus sedans. Called the Breeze, this sedan is notable for its contemporary styling and excellent space efficiency. Although roughly the size of a Honda Accord, the Breeze offers a significantly more spacious feeling cabin.

To keep its cost and image down, it gets only one engine, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. While both the Stratus and Cirrus are offered with a larger four-cylinder and a V-6, no Breeze will have those powerplants.

One drivetrain combination unique to the Breeze is the 132-horsepower 2.0-liter engine coupled to an automatic transmission. While the Stratus (but not the Cirrus) can be equipped with the 2.0-liter engine, only the Breeze will have it with an automatic transmission. A 5-speed manual will also be available.

The Breeze should prove to be a formidable competitor in the midsize sedan segment, with an anticipated base price below $14,000.

SUBARU LEGACY

Subaru has not had much luck with the Legacy when competing against a wide assortment of midsize sedan competition. However, it does reasonably well in the import station wagon market.

Taking note of its successes and jumping on a new trend, Subaru is taking its wagon and toughening up the image. A new Outback model is an all-wheel-drive Legacy wagon with a raised suspension, more rugged bodywork bodywork /body·work/ (-wurk?) a general term for therapeutic methods that center on the body for the promotion of physical health and emotional and spiritual well-being, including massage, various systems of touch and manipulation, , raised roofline roof·line

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

This Volkswagen's most popular car and a vehicle that is sold and respected worldwide. The Golf has the same universal appeal in the '90s as the Beetle did in the '60s and '70s. All VW Golfs sold in the U.S. now come from Mexico, which helps guarantee a low price. And with a renewed emphasis on quality, the Mexican-built VWs may one day regain a reputation for being reliable.

Offered in two-door and four-door hatchback body styles, a unique European blend of handling and sentiment is the Golf's primary asset. Prices start around $14,000, and standard equipment indudes dual air bags, alarm system, power locks, folding rear seat and rear window wiper.

SATURN

After a thorough interior revision last year, Saturn is giving its sedan models a new exterior. Station wagons also share the new design, but coupes must wait until next year.

Shape is more rounded than before. Rear doors are larger for easier entry, and a taller roofline adds headroom, which was previously in short supply.

There are three varieties of the sedan, SL, SL1 and SL2. The most important difference is under the hood under the hood - [hot-rodder talk] 1. The underlying implementation of a product (hardware, software, or idea). Implies that the implementation is not intuitively obvious from the appearance, but the speaker is about to enable the listener to grok it. . The SL and SL1 get a 100-horsepower 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine. The SL2 receives the same engine but gets 16 rather than eight valves, giving it a boost in horsepower to 124, a rather large jump. Both are offered with a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

While Saturn pricing seems quite competitive with other cars in the class--the SL2 star at $12,295--the dealers don't bargain. That's an advantage to many people weary of spending time trying to find out the "real price" of the car, but must be compared to the often discounted price of the competition.

CHEVROLET CAVALIER

Having introduced its all-new Cavalier last year, Chevrolet is continuing with improvements and line expansion. Recently, the Z24, with its 150-horsepower 16-valve four-cylinder engine, was added, making this a quick, yet affordable coupe. A convertible, complete with power top, also made its recent debut.

Technology Also marches forward. A new optional automatic transmision is a four-speed unit. This transmission includes a sophisticated traction control system A traction control system (TCS), on current production vehicles, are typically (but not necessarily) electro-hydraulic systems designed to prevent loss of traction (and therefore the control of the vehicle) when excessive throttle or steering is applied by the driver.  to prevent wheelspin A wheelspin occurs when the driver of a motor vehicle accidentally or deliberately spins the wheels of the vehicle on the road before moving off.

When done deliberately this is a lesser form of a burnout, because the intention is not to cause excessive tire wear, but merely
 on slippery roads.

Meanwhile, at a starting price of just $10,500, you can get a smart-looking coupe with a 120-horsepower engine, dual air bags and anti-lock brakes. The sedan adds just $200 to the price, white the Z24 costs $14,200. A convertible remains among the lowest priced cars on the market at $17,500.

At this low price, the Cavalier supplies a surprising amount of interior room, comfort, good ergonomics and styling. There is an unfortunate lapse of security--particularly for the convertible--because the folding rear seatbacks cannot be locked and neither can the glove box, leaving no place to secure valuables.

HONDA CIVIC

A sixth-generation Civic shows up for 1996 with a different took. The cars are larger in most exterior dimensions, gaining particularly in height. As before, the Civic remains a model of thoughtful design and sophisticated engineering. Prices begin in the $10,000 neighborhood for a rather barebones model and can easily reach into the $15,000 neighborhood when completely equipped. There are five trim levels, in order of equipment level: CX, DX, HX, LX and EX. All get a 1.6-liter 16-valve four-cylinder engine, varying from 106 horsepower (CX, DX and LX) to 115 horsepower (HX) and 127 horsepower

GEO TRACKER

With sport-utility vehicles so hot right now, Chevrolet can't have too many in the lineup. Starting at the full-size Suburban, through the Tahoe and Blazer, you end up at the affordable part of the lineup, the Geo Tracker.

Until 1996, the Suzuki-built Tacker was available only in two-door form. Now Chevrolet/Geo dealers get a four-door model as well. Also added this year are such features as dual air bags and optional anti-lock brakes. The two-door remains in convertible form only, while the four-door gets a substantial stretch in wheelbase for increased interior room and comfort.

Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The 95-horsepower output is not much more than adequate, but the fuel economy is far better than the majority of SUVs.

If you want a two-door, rear-drive model, prices begin at just $12,970. Add two more doors to reach $14,570. Four-wheel-drive models start at $14,450 with two doors and $15,320 with four. You'd be hard-pressed to reach $20,000 when fully loaded, an area where most SUVs begin.

RANGE ROVER 4.0 S.E.

The previous Range Rover soldiered on for years with its 1970's-designed aluminum body, boxy shape and Buick-engineered alloy V-8 engine. Something of a charming relic, the Range Rover created a catchet that was hard to match. The new Range Rover hopes to continue that cachet cachet /ca·chet/ (ka-sha´) a disk-shaped wafer or capsule enclosing a dose of medicine.

ca·chet

with a largely redesigned model that moves further in the direction of luxury sedans. A lavish fist of comforts and conveniences will rival the best from Mercedes, Jaguar or BMW.

Its (seldom-used) off-road prowess is legendary. So, too, is its price and appetite for fuel. So in order to justify the high tariff, this $55,000 Range Rover is loaded with features. Standard are automatic climate control with temperature settings for driver and front passenger, 10-way power front seats with memory, audio controls on the steering wheel, leather, wood and so on.

Mechanically, a wider track and refined air suspension that can adjust ride height to vehicle speed and road condition improve on-road performance. The 190-horsepower V-8 does a minimal job of moving nearly 5,000 pounds, but this is a long way from beg a performance sedan.

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size sport utility vehicle produced by the Jeep division of DaimlerChrysler. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. Development
The Grand Cherokee was a spinoff of the smaller Jeep Cherokee.

An exterior face-lift gives the Grand Cherokee its greatest change since its introduction. Although you'll have to be familiar with the vehicle to notice, there is a new grille, fascia fascia (făsh`ēə), fibrous tissue network located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone. Fascia is composed of two layers, a superficial layer and a deep layer.  and cladding. Inside, changes are more significant, with the addition of new dashboard that includes dual air bags. There are also some refinements to the base inline-six-cylinder engine and to the optional Quadra Trac four-wheel-drive system.

Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee remains one of the strongest entries for those who take off-roading seriously. You get a choice of three different four-wheel-drive systems and standard and-lock brakes. Two-wheel drive models beginning at a somewhat lofty $24,603, while the Limited weighs in at $32,906. Although it's already well-equipped options can take even that price higher.

With 185 horsepower, the engine provides ample thrust. The V-8 adds 30 horsepower and has become a status option. With its extra weight, thirst and noise there is no advantage for those who don't have major towing duties in mind.

OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA

After a one-year hiatus, Oldsmobile's upscale sport utility vehicle is back. Based on the redesigned Chevrolet Blazer, the Oldsmobile version gets some subtle styling changes and a long list of standard features, nearly all of which can be ordered on the Chevy and GMC GMC

See: Guaranteed Mortgage Certificate
versions of this truck GM's full-time all-wheel-drive system is standard on the Bravada. This system is designed for use on slippery pavement, rather than for hard-core off-road trails. (It lacks the low-range gearing available in the other vehicles.) In reality, the SmartTrak system is better suited to most people's needs.

Powering the Bravada is a 190-horsepower V-6 that has evolved over the years to be a reasonable responsive engine. Automatic transmission is your only choice.

Inside, the Bravada has leather-trimmed seats from the Aurora sedan, a built-in garage door opener (that can memorize three functions), an overhead console with compass and outside thermometer, trip computer, AM/FM/cassette stereo and lots of imitation wood-grain trim. Despite the luxury trimmings, there is still little to distinguish this vehicle from the less costly Chevy model. Bravada should start at around $30,000.

FORD EXPLORER V-8

Since soon after its 1990 model year debut, the Explorer has been the top-selling sport-utility vehicle. With decent ride quality and handling plus the largest interior volume in its class, people simply flock to this vehicle despite its having the least powerful engine among domestic competitors.

Last year, Ford updated the Explorer with a smoother look and more refined suspension. And while sales are still hot, Ford is forward looking enough to know this can't last forever. To pump up its image, a 5.0-liter V-8 engine brings horsepower up to 195 from 160 with the V-6. With gobs of torque, this engine produces more commanding acceleration than the horsepower number would seem to indicate.

For now, this engine is available only in the rear-drive XLT XLT Exalt

of the breed for the past dozen years. Minivan owners don't like to give up their vehicles; they'd rather upgrade to a better minivan than switch to a different sort of vehicle. As a result, the company's Town & Country, its most luxurious model, keeps increasing in sales volume. For 1996, the company is offering not one, but three varieties. A base model includes a substantial amount of luxury in an extended length format, while the LXi simply increases the amount of luxury. New to Chrysler is the LX, a short wheelbase minivan that gives owners the luxury with less bulk. It's aimed more at those with smaller families who still like the minivan concept. Prices start at $23,000 for the base and roughly $30,000 for the LXi. The LXi gets more luxury than the base model, but its smaller size brings the price in at $21,751.

LXi models get a 3.8-liter V-6, while the other two get a 3.3-liter version of the same engine. All-wheel drive is an option that will become available later in the year, perhaps prior to the winter snowfall.

NISSAN PATHFINDER

With the current pickup truck-based Pathfinder having become very expensive despite being smaller, slower and less luxurious than its domestic competitors, Nissan is trying a new tact--there will be an entirely new platform. Prices now start at close to $22,000, although most sell near or above $30,000.

Since few SUVs are used off-road, the Pathfinder is going to have unibody construction, more like a cat than a truck. A stretch in the wheelbase, width and overall length will make the interior more spacious.

Although unit body construction is lighter, the larger size will keep weight about the same. To gain acceleration, the 3.0-liter V-6 engine will be enlarged to 3.3-liters. Power will be increased to around 175 horsepower.

On the outside, the Pathfinder will lose some of its muscular character when the wider body abandons the fender blisters in favor of the slab-sided look. Dual air bags will be standard equipment, along with a completely revised interior design.

TOYOTA RAV4

Sport Utility Vehicles continue to be the fastest growing segment of the new vehicle market. Toyota wants to make sure it has all the bases covered, so it is introducing the new RAV4 as its entry-level SUV.

The company hasn't announced pricing, but this vehicle should begin well under $20,000 barely break that figure when loaded. Both two- and four-door models are going to be available.

Unlike most SUVs, Toyota isn't going to pitch this at what used to be thought of as the traditional market. The full-time four-wheel-drive system is useful for slippery roads, but lacks the low-range ability to actually go off the road. This is merely a small car shaped to look like a truck. A two-wheel-drive model will also be offered for those who want the look without performance.

Compared to something like an all-wheel-drive station wagon, the RAV4 offers only its trucklike styling as a marketing advantage. With more expensive, real SUVs selling so well, this is Toyota's chance to bring one of its trendy Japanese home market products to the U.S., and see if it can be as successful here as it is there.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA

Mechanically (and in most other respects) the Jetta JETTA Joint Environment Testing, Training and Analysis  is simply is Volkswagen Golf with a trunk. Because sedan styling is more popular here, the Jetta has become VW's most popular model in the U.S. (The Golf still outsells it handily hand·i·ly

Jettas are now built primarily in Mexico, although the car's German design is readily apparent in the driving character. Unfortunately, Mexican-built VWs have failed to live up to the durability of their German counterparts. Volkswagen claims to have remedied this problem, and a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty is there to back up the promise.

For 1996, Volkswagen has given the Jetta a new look in front. The headlights and grille give this sedan a more modern look, one the company hopes will appeal to more Americans. Prices and performance range from mild to sporting, with base four-cylinder models starting at around $13,000 and 115 horsepower. The high-performance GLX adds a potent 172-horsepower V-6, traction control, ABS and sporting trim, topping at around $22,000 fully loaded.

PORSCHE 911

Porsche extensively redesigned its 911 sports car for 1995. In 1996 the line expands, as it must. Both the 968 and 928 models are being deleted, ending the era of Porsches with engines in front,

First of the 1996 models to arrive at Porsche is the potent 911 Turbo, returning to the exotic car market after a year on hiatus. With twin turbos, 400 horsepower, six forward gears, and full-time all-wheel drive, this 911 is simply bursting with technology. One need look no further than those rear tires, size 285/30-18, to know this car means business. The sidewall is so thin it appears to be painted on those mammoth 18-inch rims.

With more horsepower, all-wheel drive and improvements all the way around, one of the biggest surprise is that the price hasn't changed since the last iteration in the 1994 model year. A 911 Turbo still costs just $99,000, at least before taxes and insurance.

And just like all Porsche 911s for the past few decades, you still get that raspy rasp·y

ACURA NSX-T

Honda's all-aluminum super car is unique in many ways. Numerous less costly sports cars offer more power, flashier styling and more up-to-the-minute features. Few, if any, however, can match the NSX's refinement and sophistication.

This mid-engine two-seater is extremely well balanced. The high-revving 270-horsepower V-6 makes a mechanical sound reminiscent of Formula One race cars. The manual gear box is surgically precise, and the suspension generates telepathic te·lep·a·thy

BMW 318Ti

BMW is getting back in the "affordable" end of the market with its 318Ti, at a starting price of $19,900 (although this should increase a bit for 1996). This fall, a Club Sport is being added with a sport suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, for lights, sport seats, special red/black cloth/leather upholstery and a few slight cosmetic adjuncts. The engine displacement grows to 1.9 from 1.8 liter for slightly improved acceleration.

The 318Ti is a two-door hatchback. It rides on the same wheelbase as other three-series models and, from the front bumper to the windshield pillars, is identical with sedan models. Overall length is 8.8 inches shorter, with a hatch opening for more convenient cargo storage. Split-folding rear seats help accommodate longer objects.

To bring the price in $5,700 lower than the next cheapest BMW, there are some compromises. But they're done with enough cleverness that the 318Ti ends up being a significant bargain with the quality feel that owners of more expensive models have come to appreciate. It's simply in a smaller package with styling that's mildly quirky.

NISSAN 200SX

Rather than offer a two-door version of its Sentra sedan, as it has in past generations, Nissan is offering a hatchback model instead. To provide a sportier image, it also gets a separate name, the 200SX.

The 200SX is available in three trim levels: base, SE and SE-R. Base and SE models share a 1.6-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder engine putting out 115 horsepower. Those who desire a more powerful experience can choose the SE-R, which ups the ante with a 2.0-liter powerplant pumping out a healthy 140 horsepower.

Inside, the 200SX is comfortable and functional. Standard equipment includes cup holders, tilt steering wheel, tachometer, dual power outside mirrors and rear window defroster de·frost·er

CHRYSLER SEBRING

Chrysler is largely credited with the revival of the affordable convertible. When the last Cadillac Eldorado convertible was sold in 1976, pundits proclaimed the end of an era.

Midway through the '80s, Chrysler reintroduced the convertible with the compact LeBaron, and the little ragtop rag·top

was an instant success. After nearly ten years of glory with the LeBaron, Chrysler is completely reinventing their convertible in the image of the far more sophisticated Sebring sport coupe.

Although called Sebringing, the convertible model is actually-based on the mechanical components of the Cirrus sedan--which is a good place to start. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 2.5-liter V-6 engines carry over, as does the independent suspension. And because this car was intended as a convertible from the start, the chassis has been factory-reinforced for the special duties of a drop top.

Base JX and premium JXi models will be offered, with a power-operated top standard. Leather and premium audio are options. Prices are expected to start in the low-$20,000 range.

MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR-4

After bringing out its unusual Spyder model late last year, Mitsubishi is leaving the 3000GT alone for 1996. It still comes in a choice of GT, SL and VR-4 models, with prices ranging from just under $3 1,000 to the mid-$40,000 range. That is unless you opt for the Spyder, which reaches around $65,000.

Except for the Spyder version, the 3000GT is otherwise the same car as the Dodge Stealth. At Dodge, prices start under $24,000 and remain below $40,000.

The VR-4 is the apex of the 3000GT line with its twin turbocharged V-6 engine producing 320 horsepower. A full-time all-wheel-drive system helps get all that power to the ground. To increase the amount of the rubber meeting the road, that model is equipped with giant 18-inch tires.

The Spyder's hard top retracts into the trunk, eliminating storage space but providing an open cockpit instead. A retractable re·tract

FORD MUSTANG

The original pony car is going high-tech for 1996. Under the hood of the Mustang GT the old 5.0-liter V-8 engine is being replaced by an overhead cam 4.6-liter powerplant. Despite this infusion of modern technology, horsepower remains unchanged at 215.

Those who find that number inadequate when competing against 285-horsepower Chevy Camaros will have to get a limited edition Mustang Cobra. That gets the 32-valve DOHC version of the GT's V-8, upping horsepower to an impressively puissant puis·sance

 305.

Meanwhile, those who simply want the Mustang's sporty retro look can still find economy in the 3.8-liter V-6 engine. That model starts out at $15,680 while a GT and Cobra will set you back a minimum of $18,110 and $25,310, respectively. You can also get convertible versions of these cars, starting at $23,995 and rising to $27,850 for the Cobra.

With the overhead cam engine, a GT or Cobra feels like a race car. Some low-rpm torque is lost, but the smooth run to redline more than makes up the difference, This is a more serious performance car than ever.
