For the November quarter, the profit available to BHP shareholders excluding abnormal items was Dollar 396 million, an increase of Dollar 109 million over the August quarter and the third successive quarterly improvement.

For the first time the release incorporates more detailed Business Group profit information which is attached. Business Group results were:

-- Minerals' profit for the half year was Dollar 230 million, an

increase of Dollar 7 million or 3.1 percent above the corresponding

period. The result reflects higher U.S. Dollar prices for coal and

iron ore ore, metal-bearing mineral mass that can be profitably mined. Nearly all rock deposits contain some metallic minerals, but in many cases the concentration of metal is too low to justify mining the ore. , increased shipments of iron ore and higher costs at the

-- Copper's profit for the half year was Dollar 217 million, a

decrease of Dollar 103 million or 32.2 percent compared to the

profit excluding abnormal items in the corresponding period.

Major factors affecting the result were lower realised copper

prices, increased despatches DESPATCHES. Official communications of official Persons, on the affairs of government.

-- Steel's profit for the half year was Dollar 180 million, a

decrease of Dollar 115 million or 39.0 percent on the corresponding

period. Lower export prices and higher raw material and labour

costs were partly offset by the inclusion of the Tubemakers results.

-- Petroleum's profit, excluding the abnormal PRRT item was Dollar

335 million, an increase of Dollar 137 million or 69.2 percent

above the corresponding period. Significant factors which affected

the result were higher prices for oil and condensate condensate, matter in the form of a gas of atoms, molecules, or elementary particles that have been so chilled that their motion is virtually halted and as a consequence they lose their separate identities and merge into a single entity.  and increased

profit from asset sales, partly offset by higher exploration

expenditure.

-- Service Companies' profit for the half year was Dollar

86 million, an increase of Dollar 35 million compared to the

corresponding period. The result included a profit on sale of the

oil tanker "Iron Gippsland Gippsland (gĭps`lănd), geographical area, 13,655 sq mi (35,366 sq km), Victoria, SE Australia, E of Melbourne. There are deposits of coal, oil and natural gas (offshore), and limestone. Gold was formerly mined. ."

The higher A Dollar/U.S. Dollar exchange rate adversely affected earnings. -0-
