1992 FIRST HALF U.S. FACTORY SALES OF ELECTRONICS
TOTAL $138.2 BILLION; UP 5 PERCENT
/ADVANCE/ WASHINGTON, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. factory shipments of electronics equipment, components and related products totaled more than $138.2 billion for the first half of 1992, which represents an increase of 5 percent over the 1991 first half total industry sales of $131.6 billion, according to figures released today by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA).
In announcing the first half statistics, EIA President Peter F. McCloskey stated: "The industry is continuing to exhibit a healthy growth rate despite some recent negative national economic indicators. Based on current inventory levels, we have good reason to be guardedly optimistic for a continued pick-up in production for the second half."
A breakdown for the 1992 first half of U.S. factory sales by industry indicates the telecommunications equipment sector increased 8.8 percent from $16.9 billion in 1991 to $18.4 billion the first half of 1992.
Other communications(A) related devices totaled $14.7 billion, down 5.5 percent from the 1991 first half figure of $15.6 billion.
Electronic components shipments totaled $28.6 billion, up 2.7 percent from the 1991 year to date total of $27.8 billion.
The computers and peripherals sector reflects an increase of 11.8 percent from $25.1 billion in 1991 to $28.0 billion in 1992 year to date.
The industrial electronics sector grew slightly from $12.0 billion during the first half of 1991 to $12.2 billion for the same time in 1992, showing an increase of 1.7 percent.
Electromedical equipment grew 4.4 percent from $3.7 billion in 1991 to $3.9 billion for the first half of 1992.
The U.S. consumer electronics sector increased to $4.8 billion in the first half of 1992, 18.3 percent above last year's first half figure of $4.1 billion.
Sales of other electronics related products and services tallied $27.6 billion, increasing 4.5 percent over sales of $26.4 billion reported in last year's first half.
For more than 68 years, the Electronic Industries Association has been the national trade organization representing U.S. electronics manufacturers. Committed to the competitiveness of the American producer, EIA represents the entire spectrum of companies involved in the manufacture of electronic components, parts, systems and equipment for communications, industrial, government and consumer-end uses.
