1918 CLUB MEMBERS DECIDE TO DISBAND.

``I used to make sure of this and that, but I am too tired now, and we lost four members this year,'' said Grace Ridosh, president of the Simi Valley chapter, one of six chapters with a total of 173 members in California.

Lifting a glass of champagne to the dozen-or-so years the Simi Valley chapter has been meeting, the 5-foot-1 leader offered a toast Monday: ``This is to our last Christmas party of the 1918 Club.''

``It's not the end; we are still coming,'' said Owen Grumber, a former opera singer and electrician who fought in World War II and lives in West Hills.

``Age is a state of mind,'' said Villarino, a great-grandmother of five who joined the Simi Valley chapter seven months ago to see how she stacked up against others her age.

``We have been through all the changes together - from iceboxes to refrigerators to automatic washing machines; from radio, then television, then a man on the moon,'' she said.

At its height, in the mid-1980s, the club boasted more than 2,000 members internationally. The first 1918 convention was held in Louisville, Ky., in May 1968, and every two years after that. Had it not been for the wheelchairs and walkers that proliferate at their annual conventions, the leaders might have considered one last meeting in 2004.
