Appalachian State University began in the summer of 1899 when a group of citizens of Watauga County, NC, under the leadership of D.D. Dougherty and B.B. Dougherty, began a movement to establish a good school in Boone, NC. Land was donated by D.B. as he led the team to three conference championships. Longtime coaches Denise Aldrich and Richard "Skip" Knight were inducted, and Howard Greis and Dan Reynolds were each presented with the Mountaineer Award, which recognizes members of the community for their longtime support of athletics at the high school. Induction Committee member and former principal Harold Lane said that the Hall of Fame got its start in the mid-1980s, and the first class of inductees was honored in 1985.
